SYNOPSIS AMOR y MUERTE is an erotic 16th Century period drama; an examination of the initial encounter between the Indios (natives) and their colonizers (Spaniards) and their conflicting views on love, passion, religion and sexuality.

FILMMAKER PROFILE Cesar has had a checkered career as magazine editor, talent manager, and filmmaker but teaching was something that Evangelista has never totally abandoned or ever would. To this day, he teaches at the Department of Fine Arts in EARIST. And yes, the love for teaching can only be equaled by his fascination with motion pictures. In the very late '90s when Mother Lily Monteverde initiated the "pito-pito" movies, quality productions made on a shoestring budget and, as the term implies, often finished in all of 7 days, Evangelista was among those tapped by the Regal Films matriarch to make movies for the fabled film outfit. Unlike other filmmakers who took formal lessons, Evangelista ventured into the medium raw and armed only with everything that he has heard, read, watched, observed, experienced, and appreciated in life. That was to be the first phase of his career as a filmmaker. More than a decade later comes Amor Y Muerte (Love & Death), Evangelista's entry to this year's Directors Showcase of the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival, ostensibly a love triangle set in 16th century Philippines but is also a gripping portrait of how the invaders--the Spaniards with their own notions on love, sexuality, and religion--inevitably robbed the natives of their sense of rawness, spontaneity, and utter lack of guile. Others may label it a comeback of sorts but Evangelista, a perennial student of life, prefers to call it the next phase of his evolving, ever-changing, journey through life and the arts.
