"Clothes Budget" Director Ezra Stone. We love this episode a classic in the series. Joan stops doctoring up an old evening gown with an even older bow when she finds out that her nemesis, Helen Cavanaugh, played with ultimate aplomb by Adele Jergens-a great foil for Joan in this series, will attend the upcoming charity ball. Brad agrees to give her $412, the amount, he says, that the average woman in their tax bracket spends for a year's worth of clothing. There's a funny bit in the first scene that Joan does with sewing that's cut out of the print that's going around. That bit is restored here. Because Helen taunts her in the store, Joan spends all the money on one gown. Joan pays for the dress in front of Helen, but finds out after Helen exits that the dress is a final sale. Fritz Feld plays the officious French salesman. In the meantime, the welfare league takes every stitch of clothing from her closet. All she has left is the $400 gown. She tries to get her dresses back from the league, and gets in all kinds of trouble because of the stink she made about getting her dresses back. Some very funny walk-ons by the returnees.
