"Joan Plays Cupid" Director Ezra Stone. Writers Jesse Goldstein, Phil Sharp, Hugh Wedlock, Howard Snyder. This episode introduces Sally Kelly and Wally Brown as regulars (Although Mr. Brown appeared earlier in the series as various characters, he now became a recurring one.) Sally's been carrying a torch for Wally since she moved to Seattle eight years earlier. She's returned to Los Angeles and confesses to Joan that she hasn't dated anyone since Wally. Joan tries to set her up by starting a rumor that Sally's an heiress. Two gigolos show up, one of them played by Jerry Hausner (Jerry on "I Love Lucy"). The plot has twists and turns too numerous to describe here. Suffice it to say that ultimately Joan hires an escort to romance Sally to make Wally jealous. Things then get crazy. This one has some terrific dialog and wonderfully funny word play. Joan is full of surprises. There's a moment where we discover a statue of Buddha on her mantle. She takes a moment to sniff the incense during a particularly tense proceeding! This is a two-parter of sorts. The following week's episode, "The Wedding," continues the Wally/Sally courtship to the nuptials. Watch for that episode on the JDC. Features Wally Brown, Sally Kelly, Jerry Hausner, Jack Kruschen, Harry Bartell, Alan DeWitt.
