"Pop Retires" Director John Rich. Writers Jesse Goldstein, Phil Sharp, Sherwood Schwartz. A very ambitious episode! Brad tells Joan his parents want to re-locate from Cleveland to California for their retirement. Joan offers to write a letter offering temporary lodging until they find a house. She's just finishing the letter when her friend Mabel calls and tells her there's a dress in the window of a store that's "size 10, light blue and half-price." Joan bolts, leaving the letter on the desk. Enter Joan's sis, Bev, with reluctant boyfriend Tom (Beverly Wills and Tom Peters). Bev reads the letter and assumes it's meant for her and Joan's parents in Minnesota, and mails it. Joan's parents (El Brendel and Mabel Paige) soon show up. Ultimately they talk Pop into getting a job. He finds employment at the Amalgamated Aircraft Company, a firm for which Brad is handling some legal matters. When Joan finds out that Pop is working for said company, she rushes down there to tell him to quit, worrying conflict of interest for Brad, as Pop always brags about his Judge-Son-in-Law. Gusty mayhem ensues as Joan and Pop inadvertently get sucked into a very active wind tunnel. El Brendel worked with Joan in the 1937 Jane Withers vehicle, "The Holy Terror." He appeared in two other IMJs "Masquerade" and "Get Rich Quick." Mabel Paige, who appeared with Joan in 1948's "If You Knew Susie," reprises her role of Joan's Mom from IMJ's "Mothers-in-Law," which aired a few months before this one. Miss Paige passed away shortly after this episode was filmed.
