"Masquerade" Director John Rich. Writers Sherwood Schwartz, Jesse Goldstein, Phil Sharp. This rarely seen episode opens on the meeting of "the committee for this year's the men will wear costumes to the country club dance" Geraldine Carr as Mabel, Betty Blythe (character's name not mentioned), and Sondra Gould (Gladys Kravitz #2 on "Bewitched") here called "Betty." In other episodes Ms. Gould is called "Elsie" and "Mildred Webster." Joan boasts to the girls that since this is the first year she's on the committee, the men will finally wear costumes. Her reason? Brad acted in college and liked wearing them. She pitches that if she can convince Brad, the other men will follow. "Divide and Conquer." Meanwhile, Brad and his cronies banter in the country club locker room about said dance. Brad tries to convince the men that costumes are fun and Charlie Henderson (Hal Smith) succeeds in convincing Brad that the "little pan" he had in college has turned into a "big pot" and that he would look ridiculous in one. The men (including Richard "Dick" Elliott and Tim Graham) agree to form a united front against costumes. Brad returns home with this resolve in mind. Joan enlists her Swedish dad, played by El Brendel, to help convince him to change his mind. Joan tries myriad ways of strong arming Brad, including withholding "kisses," food, darning socks and doing laundry. Brad finally gives in to a surprising stimulus. The night of the dance the men switch costumes with the women. Cross-dressing at the country club! The JDC's Halloween gift to you. Enjoy! SideBar "El Brendel had a recurring role on IMJ as Joan's dad. Also, this "Swedish comic" acted with Joan in the 1937 Jane Withers' vehicle "The Holy Terror." Richard "Dick" Elliott was a veteran of many IMJ episodes. The short, rotund man with the distinctive voice appeared also in many of Joan films 1941's "Two Latins from Manhattan," 1942's "Sweetheart of the Fleet" and "Yokel Boy," 1944's "Show Business" and 1946's "She Wrote the Book."
