"Recipe" Director Marc Daniels Writers Sherwood Schwartz, Arthur Stander. The episode opens with Joan fretting about the imminent arrival of her nemesis, Helen Cavanaugh, played in this episode by Emlen Davies. Later episodes featured Adele Jergens as Helen. (Miss Jergens played Marilyn Monroe's mother in "Ladies of the Chorus"). Helen has everything better, does everything better and knows everything better, according to Helen, of course. Joan always got great comedic mileage out of her interaction with the Helen character. The plot The Stevens invite three other couples to their home for an evening of parlor games. Joan gets to show off her physical skills when she does a version of her signature slip-sliding routine during a game of charades. She has an impossible time acting out "Ice Cream Has No Bones" and the ladies' ridiculous suggestions for what Joan is trying so desperately to communicate made us LOL here at the JDC. Act Two The Women's Welfare League is planning their annual charity fair. Helen is the soup-making champion four years running. Joan decides to challenge her. Helen finds out that the judge loves the oxtail soup at Alfonso's restaurant, so in an effort to get the recipe first, Joan poses as an assistant chef, and ends up in the huge pot with all the ingredients. Note during the charades sequence watch Geraldine Carr, who plays Mabel. She tries to stifle a laugh during a particularly funny moment.
