"Opera" Director Marc Daniels. Writers Arthur Stander, Ben Starr. Bing Crosby guests. Joan's "Women's Welfare League" decides to stage an opera as a fund-raiser. Joan is elected "Impresario," a term bandied about by just about everyone in the episode. They contract a retired Wagnerian über-diva, Madame Cortini, to play the lead. Some very funny stuff here. Jim and Joan work so well off each other in the scene where a reluctant Brad apologizes to the diva. Well-executed shtick. The bulk of this scene was cut in the print that was available; we have restored it here. Of course, Mme. Cortini quits at the eleventh hour and Joan saves the day lip-synching, horns, pigtails and sword intact! The opera scene's even funnier with the sound off. In the JDC's mission statement, we describe Miss Davis as "unabashedly silly and fearless." She exemplifies that here. She's out there all alone, and silly, and funny, making no apologies, just making us laugh. A lot. Sidebar Bing Crosby was still on radio in 1952 and his sponsor was GE, as was Joan's. The walk-on he does at the end of the episode, to our knowledge so far, the only time IMJ had a "name" guest star, was clearly orchestrated by their mutual sponsor, and illuminated by the fact that the scene was in the kitchen and prefaced by a long shot of Joan at the stove with the rest of the GE appliances in view.
