"Bazaar Pie" Director Marc Daniels. Writers Arthur Stander, Philip Sharp, Frank Tarloff. Extra Footage-Opening Scene! We here at the JDC forgot how good this episode is! Plus, there's a restored scene at the opening that clarifies the plot! This is one of a handful where the wonderful Elvia Allman (the Candy Factory "speed it up" lady from the famous "I Love Lucy" episode) plays Joan's Aunt Vera. There are some adult themes played with in this, unusual for the time. Two intertwined plot lines first, Joan's baking apple pies for the women's welfare league's charity bazaar, and second, Joan tries to set Aunt Vera up with the eligible wealthy bachelor next door. Aunt Vera's response to Joan's question, "Why Aunt Vera, I didn't know that you had men on your mind" is "Only occasionally...yes. You know, in the day, and at night." By the twinkle in Aunt Vera's eye, there's no question as to what's on her mind! Joan sends a mash note to the bachelor inviting him to the house. In the meantime, she charges a $5,000 diamond ring for Aunt Vera to wear to impress the bachelor. He shows up and mistakenly thinks the note is from Joan. When all goes south, Joan looks for the ring to return it. Did she bake it into one of the pies? Hmmm. Another "Lucy" alumnus, Jerry Hausner, plays the bachelor's valet. Geraldine Carr appears as a club lady named "Edna." Ms. Carr later recurred as Joan's best friend, Mabel. Jim Backus is great in this one, especially in the scene where Joan tells him she can't find the ring. Watch how incredibly well they play off each other!
