"Birthday" Director Marc Daniels, Writers Arthur Stander, Philip Sharp, Frank Tarloff. This episode made us LOL here at the JDC! Elvia Allman (the forewoman in the "I Love Lucy" candy factory episode) appears here in her recurring role as Joan's Aunt Vera. Brad cuts Joan's "allowance" and cancels her charge accounts because she has been fiscally irresponsible with the checkbook. She wants to throw Brad a surprise birthday party and needs money to do so. Since he's cut her off financially, she goes to a small dress shop she assumes he forgot about (actually the dress shop is the bedroom set re-dressed!) and convinces shoppers to allow her to buy their dresses for them on her charge account. They then pay her cash for the dress at a savings of 25%. The saleslady insists Joan try on the dresses. The first is very large the shopper is Kathleen Freeman, (Lena Lamont's diction coach in "Singing in the Rain,") and the second (Connie Vann) is very thin. Joan tries on both dresses to flamboyant comic effect. Later, she needs to get Brad out of the house for the party set-up. He says he hates hockey, so she insists they go to a game figuring he'd want to leave early. To her dismay, he avidly gets into it and doesn't want to leave. They get home late, but the party happens anyway, but with a surprise twist.
