Cung Le taught Sanshou techniques and was our main guest of honor at our annual Fight camp this year. As you might already know Cung uses Sanda techniques to dominate his opponents in the UFC. Sanshou simply means Free hand fighting and isn't a style per say but the application of kung-fu techniques with full contact. Brutal knock-outs and finishes as well as explosive throws and sweeps make up this sport. Extremely popular in China with some schools boasting 1000 students, Sanshou fighters are mixing ground grappling techniques to become every well rounded adversaries. One of the reasons why Sanshou is so attractive and quickly rivaling Muay Thai as the "go to" stand up art is the mixing of all 3 elements. Boxing with Elbows, Kicking and sweeps mixed in with Judo like throws. This way the student doesn't need to learn a throwing art like a Muay Thai fighter would in order to stay competitive in MMA.

Sanshou means "Free Hand" or traditionally, Sparring is called Sanda which means "Free Fighting". It's a mixture of various Kung-Fu styles rolled into one. Kinda like how the Soviets created their Sambo or how MMA has evolved in North America and now the world.
