'Kuhle Wampe or Who Owns The World' (aka 'Whither Germany?') (1932)
Starring: Hertha Thiele, Ernst Busch, Adolf Fischer and Helene Weigel
Director: Slatan Dudow
Screenplay: Bertolt Brecht

Drama set in 1931 about a working-class family in Berlin, where survival is difficult, with massive unemployment in the wake of the Great Depression.

Annie's brother cannot find a job and is pressed by his unemployed father Franz (Ernst Busch) which causes him to commit suicide in despair.

His family is subsequently evicted for non-payment of rent and finds itself forced to move to Kuhle Wampe, a lakeside camp on the outskirts of Berlin, now home to increasing numbers of unemployed. Annie's boyfriend Fritz helps them to move there and, when Anni gets pregnant, Fritz promises to marry her but he calls off the wedding after the engagement party.

After Annie's relationship with Franz ends, she moves back to Berlin and gets involved in the workers' youth movement.
