I've been fiddling around with this video for a while, and finally I'm pleased with it, so here it is. My second favorite filmed version of Thomas Hardy's "Tess Of The D'Urbervilles", specifically the ill-fated "relationship" between Tess and Alec - showing how doomed those two characters are. This is the best Tess/Alec dynamic I've seen, and this is the only time I ever wanted Tess to be with Alec - wrong as it was. Gemma Arterton and Hans Matheson excellently portrayed the tragic path that Tess and Alec end up upon and the hurt they cause each other (although Alec certainly gets most of the blame). I despised Alec in both the novel and the other two film versions, but Hans played up his vulnerability so well and he and Gemma worked so well together that I actually shed tears for both Tess and Alec at the end. I used Johnny Cash's cover of Trent Reznor's "Hurt" (and incidently, it was the last song Cash ever recorded), and I'm very happy with the outcome. So here's to Gemma and Hans for their magnificent performances. Enjoy!
