Hearts alive is the 9th song from Mastodon's acclaimed album 'Leviathan' which is themed on Moby Dick by Herman Melville. Although Leviathan is an incredibly strong album, with each song being amazing in it's own right, Hearts Alive is my personal favourite and would definitely be the highlight of the album if such a thing were to exist. It is an epic that is 13 minutes and 35 seconds long and, despite it's length, keeps my attention throughout the whole song. The song starts off with a 'mood-setting' intro, with the sea providing background noise. 2 minutes in there is a sudden change from the calm atmosphere and the guitar quickly becomes aggressive with the drums following suit. The song includes frequent instrumental breaks with flitting melodic tabs devoid of harsh vocals. I shall end the review, which has ended up being more of an essay, with this Hearts Alive (along with the album Leviathan) is a must listen if you appreciate good metal music and/or are a fan of excellent prog metal.

Fair usage states that as long as I express criticism the video will not be blocked, muted or audio-swapped. Also, as far as I know, this is the only full studio version video of hearts alive that is well... one video, all the other videos on youtube have this song in parts or cut something out. This is not the case with this.
