SYNOPSIS
What drives the passion of people who choose to follow or emulate popular culture heroes to a level where it becomes all-consuming or obsessive? We find this premise quite intriguing. Our film explores the motivations of "Fantasy Fans" that range from the uncontrollable collector to the compulsively-driven obsessive. Through interview and observation, we examine what drives these fantasies... mere memories of childhood or a need for control or escapism.
One of the key storylines follows a Superman look-a-like who survives off tips from tourists on Hollywood Boulevard. He lives in a kitsch monument to the popular culture hero, packed into the confines of a claustrophobic apartment. We reveal the fans and their stories to be as diverse as the fantasy heroes themselves. And with help from our celebrity participants, we explore how the two worlds co-exist with one another ...and how they can eventually become one in the same!
The tone is quirky, offbeat and humorous without ignoring the dark undercurrent contained in any obsessive behavior. Varied pacing allows the audience time to appreciate emotional attachments of the characters, while still responding to the rush of their passions.
