What are your thoughts on the film canon?

Mr. Saturn 11 years, 9 months ago at Aug 2 2:10 -
Do these polls somewhat resemble your top 10 films list? Would you replace any of these films?

Vertigo tops the 2012 Sight & Sound Critics' Poll, and in the possibly leaked directors' poll Tokyo Story dethroned Citizen Kane. It's significant because this is the most important film poll and the most influential when it comes to the film canon, and Citizen Kane was the top pick for 40 years, the last four polls.

I don't understand why The Mirror is by far the most popular Tarkovsky film compared to his three better films Andrei Rublev, Stalker and Solaris. Chaplin's underrated in the list.

Seriously, why "The Mirror"? I'm a Tarkovsky fanboy, but the appeals seriously puzzles me.

Anyways, respectable enough list, it's refreshing to see no films by Tarintino, Nolan, or Spielberg

Fixed it for ya ;)

I'm too unschooled on Tarkovsky to weigh in on the matter.

But I will say that from what I've seen The Searchers feels the most out of place to me, personally, despite the fact that I enjoy that film well enough.

Also, I'm a big Vertigo fan, but I just don't see it as a film that's as completely impressive and accomplished as Citizen Kane. Take Hitchcock's name away from it and there's just no way it beats out Orson's stunning, incredibly ambitious, confident, and fun debut.

Besides from being very visually poetic, The Searchers is extremely influential. The story influenced Taxi Driver.
