It's a shame this thread hasn't had more activity.

My two favorite metal bands are Kamelot and Savatage for their overall vocals, music and lyrics being breathtaking.

Those are simply my absolute favorites. Besides those two, I can't deny the classics like AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, etc. I actually love just about every genre of metal (except for doom and any similar genres just as lame). Black, death, folk, glam, heavy, thrash, viking, and so on and so forth. Metal is truly a gift from the gods.

hard to tell, i don't have just one.

black sabbath: for their doomy, heavy sound, ozzy's unique voice and great lyrics (for heavy metal standards).
metallica: for their first four groundbreaking thrash albums
judas priest: for one of the best singers in the business and just awesome musical skills and godlike live performance
iron maiden: see judas priest

there are some other bands i favor above all others, but i think the mentioned bands stand out a little more than the others.

Not really a metal fan. But I really dig some of that early stuff, more heavy rock than heavy metal. Fave bands: Black Sabbath and early Van Halen. The most awesomest album: "First Daze Here" by Pentagram, sort of a mix of heavy metal, dark psychedelia, and somekind of Detroit rock influence. It's from the 70s, their style has changed since then.

Why? No clue why.

i wouldnt say i'm a huge metal fan these days, although metal is most of what i listened to when i was younger. i still appreciate a good album though:
in no particular order...
1. The Dillinger Escape Plan - Ire Works
2. Opeth - Deliverance & Damnation (Watershed is very good as well)
3. Metallica - Master of Puppets
4. Meshuggah - Obzen (this is a recent add... interested to see if it will remain. i could easily replace it with another Dillinger album)
5. Pantera - Far Beyond Driven

8:Tenascious D:the song the metal just explains that metal will never die.

jesus, Metal is still alive??

I cut my hair short and took down posters of metal bands off my walls since... umm.. well, since I grew out of puberty....

early 90s? probably same time that Ventruss was born.. lol

and p.s. Ventruss, your typos are killing me. I assume Rag Against really means Rage Against the Machine. though its not as bad as the reasons u give for half of your choices. :)

as for the bands i USED to love... Metallica for sure, until they sold out and went after Napster like a bunch of corporate crybabies. Tool and Rage Against the Machine are sweet too. Black Sabbath, of course, but Alice Cooper as well. And would Skid Row be considered Metal? Their debut album was unbelievably good.. then they tanked big time. And Motley Crue of course, though thats definitely getting more into Hard Rock. And also can't forget AC/DC.

Whats it now 'lude? "Easy Listening" and Classic FM? Hehe.

Metallica and Maiden feel too "obvious" sometimes, but they are awesome bands, every time they churn out something new it is instantly grade A quality. My old man rediscovered his love for Iron Maiden a couple of years ago, its hilarious because he is nearly 50, but he has far far cooler taste in music than me, gives me hope I might improve with age.

Metal is cool, but some bands just make me think "Why?!" of course it is personal preference and taste, but some guys I used to work with would show me their favorite bands, and all I would hear is fast drumming, grinding on a guitar and grunting noises. If thats all you want from music why bother? Maybe its my ears?

lol... no classic easy listening for me :) Phil Collins can go suck it.

i'm all over the map lately, anything with a good beat. Really digging Tribal House this summer, mostly coz thats all they play at the best underground club in Canada, Comfort Zone.

@Prelude: you bash metal (and it's fans) and in the same breath you consider hair rock wussies Skid Row and Mรถtley Crue as metal? ;)

besides, i'm your age, and i'm not and will not ever be too old for metal, as i surely won't "grow out" of it. as with any music genre there is no age limit. i don't consider classical music listeners (which i also can be counted to) as any more adult than hip hop or metal listeners.

Bael, look i'm not gonna defend 80s glam metal's use of aquanet, but i've seen some of the more "masculine" metal band members wearing plate armor and chain mail carrying battle axes instead of guitars, looking more like they're ready to play world of warcraft than even guitar hero. i assume you are at least familiar with the type.

of course, and some of my favorite metal bands are of that type. but i'll assure you even the most outrageously dressed underground black metal band will outplay technically any band in the likes of Skid Row even when drunk and half asleep. i really don't care about looks when it comes to music (growing up with all the good and bad 80ies bands i had my share of weird), but i wouldn't ever call bands like Mรถtley Crue metal. and so wouldn't they themselves...

slipknot because there music (some songs) mean alot to me
johnny obelisk 15 years, 9 months ago at Aug 8 21:20 -
Bael, i would agree with you as far as motley crue goes. i might call them hard rock. but labels can be a difficult thing to apply. as far a technical proficiency goes, i have to disagree. rock n' roll (speaking broadly) to me, is more about emotion and less about ability. singing higher or playing faster has little to with it. granted, some genres seem to require it.

Motley Crue, Poison, Skid Row, etc. = cockrock, not metal
Burzum, Venom, Immortal, etc. = metal

I'm not a total and complete fan, but I like my grind genres (offshoots of metal). And I know what's metal and what's not.
johnny obelisk 15 years, 9 months ago at Aug 9 1:45 -
okay, perhaps its either the post-structuralist in me or the simpleton who hates being bogged down by what are becoming meaningless labels.

It's the bitchy and elitist nature in me that deems genres, labels if you will, necessary.

Now you folks see why I don't post in music threads? ;)
johnny obelisk 15 years, 9 months ago at Aug 9 3:15 -
look, i'm just saying when we start talking sub-sub-genres things get a little more difficult. while i'm neither a motley crue or skid row fan, i would not label them "cock-rock." but like i said, tom A to / tom AH to... right? at some point the distinctions are so frivolous.
well, i say that, but... i guess, especially when talking about more fringe art, followers probably do identify themselves more with the followed, which kind of explains the sometimes rabid but relatively small followings some "harder" bands have. anyways, i guess if your art is, to a large extent about being different, you want to make sure people understand that you are different. i think. i'm full of it. nevermind.

having given the idea more thought, i need to retract what i said about labels. there are plenty of labels i enjoy. (trip-hop, shoegazer, etc...) somre labels seem a bit more tedious or absurd, but that made be relative and a matter of taste.

My Favorites are:
Demon Hunter-Unique combines most metal genres

The Devil Wears Prada--keep getting heavier, raw vocal power.

August Burns REd--I have no respect for a metalcore fan that does NOT like them. They're Technical, inspirational, melodic and have killer breakdowns.

Iron Maiden--Classic, ageless, technical solos and melodic awesomeness and horse galloping! haha

JobForACowboy--death metal at some of it's most technical. Davy's vocals are barely reachable.

Black Dahlia Murder--death metal with black, metal, thrash influence and insane vocal styles. The Solos are astounding too.

Becoming The Archetype--Prog, technical, unique metal awesomeness right here. They combine everything. Superb lyrics too.

Nile!!--Death metal, explains itself

Abigail Williams--The best black metal out there. amazing.
