Winning and Losing.

In my office, a debate arose about the importance of winning (in regards to the Olympics primarilly). Is it everything?

One side believe that there is no point competing if you're not playing to win. So taking part just for the fun of it means nothing whatsoever.

The other side believes that trying your best is all you can ask of anyone. Any more than that creates the bitterness associated with being a sore loser.

Where do you stand?

Side question, Have you/Are you going to raise your children to be hot-headed boasting winners or moderately content with being average

i will raise my kids to be strong but i will teach them that

Winning is important in certain situations that are my forte, however, in any other situation I don't honestly care. I am not the gloating/boasting type(unless I am in a sugar high/hyper mood) but I don't like to lose either, I'm somewhere inbetween(though more the second opinion) I'll raise my children to be inbetween as well, that way they can choose to either be hothead, content with being average or inbetween

I don't mind if I lose or not it's the game that matters or what ever it is.
Just have fun with it even if it's a fight.

Well the aim is to win but sore losers are sore losers. Aim to win and be a gracious winner, if you should so happen to lose, be a gracious loser with pride knowing you gave it your all.

(Un)fortunately that does not dictate most aspects of my life. I go with the flow for the most part.

EDIT: In regards to the Olympics it does suck to lose when you lose through a silly mistake. For some of those people, yes, the Olympics is everything for them, but I imagine their situations are different from mine. I like to think that we've moved past the days when people died because they didn't win but for some of these athletes that's essentially what happens to them. In a way. Not really.

I'm usually one to come in the middle/runner up, I don't often come last but I practically never win and can't handle it if I do, I start worrying I am going to look like a twunt and piss people off etc. I'm so used to not winning it doesn't phase me when I lose etc, I just move on. I'd like to have that winner attitude that makes you keep on until you do it, but it has to be worth while, and very rarely are things worth the hassle.
