give me your opinion on them

What do you want to know be specific.

I find Windows XP to be much more stable, while slightly more problematic as far as multiple windows go...

Vista's starting systems, such as Norton Security and others like it, are all good, until your trial runs out, and then it checks your damn comp. freezes it to hell and doesn't let you get rid of any super bad viruses.
However I am not sure about the Vista that was made recently that was named something else as a test, that one may be better.
In other words, I personally prefer XP, but Vista has a few advantages...
But if you want a game computer, Vista isn't the best choice, a lot of game sites don't want to make one for vista because it's too... complex? I don't remember what word they used, but whatever...

I just got a Vista like 5 days ago, and it's doing pretty well.
Derron 16 years, 7 months ago at Oct 9 1:27 -
Well Vista is pretty hard to understand if your used to XP. Unless your the type of person who understands things quickly.
Devious Phenomenon 16 years, 7 months ago at Oct 9 1:29 -
I catch onto things quickly, and I liked Vista, except that I couldn't play ANY games at all cuz they all downloaded wrong. And NortoN Security was a pain in the ass cuz I had to shutdown my comp everytime it decided to do it's free scan(which can't gdo much because the trial ran out a long time ago)

I have a XP desktop and a Vista laptop. But Vista to me is way to confusing I'll get it someday.

I got it in like a day. Haha. Guess I'm a computer nerd. Kidding, I just read directions.
Devious Phenomenon 16 years, 7 months ago at Oct 9 1:51 -
Directions? Lol, I used to burn the directions for most videogames so I would have to figure it out on my own, now I can figure most things out for myself

Linux. Microsoft can suck it.

If you want to play the newest games, eventually you'll have to get vista anyway. DirectX 10 yo. Vista doesn't seem to be all that hard to navigate. Its actually very straight forward. Even moreso than XP.Thing is, to get the best experience out it you need a brand new computer. I could run XP off some piece of shit computer thats ten years old. With enough RAM it'll run off just about anything. Not even Linux can do that.

I use XP on my desktop machine and have no problem with it so I won't change it over to Vista until I absolutely have to. Plus that box has only got 1gb of memory which is, like, the bare minimum for Vista.

I just bought a new laptop a couple weeks ago that had Vista pre-installed, though, and it's been running great. The laptop has two gigs of memory and dual core processor (seriously, who buys these single core celerons?) so Vista is very responsible-- and pretty.

My only complaint is that they've moved a lot of the configuration options around to places I'm not familiar with yet so that can be kind of frustrating, but other than that it's all good.

I can download a free copy of Vista through the MSDN Academic Alliance website this semester and I'll probably end up installing it on my desktop sometime next year after I buy a new video card and some more memory.

I really want to start fiddling around with Linux again, but I'm waiting until all the finishing touches are done with KDE 4 before I give it another try.

Well, for me, Vista is unstable.
Compared to XP, it just eats too much SDRAM (Physical Memory) 48% on the OS itself.
XP is better, just as Yama said, it's more stable.
Vista's recommended SDRAM is like 3-4GB while XP doesn't need that much at all.
Best choice, buy a Vista pre-installed (cause they give lots of RAM, well some of them, get genuine XP and reinstall. It'll be awesome.)

don't do this!
Especially if you have a laptop. They are built specifically to run Vista and downgrading to XP will give you more problems than leaving it alone. Vista had hardware drivers that XP doesn't.

And the reason it appears to be using so much RAM is because it has many of your applications preloaded in it. So despite it using more RAM it should still run faster than XP.

I have Vista and I have to say when I made the decision to buy that over XP I was concerned by all the negativity surrounding it. The only reason I opted for it in the end, as opposed to XP was that eventually things would stop running on XP (So I figured anyway.)

I find now that there is absolutely no reason to be negative about this program. I have only had 1 issue with it in the months since I bought this PC and that was Creatives fault more than anything, as I ignorantly thought I would need some form of software to use my MP3 player with a different system to the one it was designed for. I checked out their website and it advised me to get an XP computer without service pack 2 on it, and with windows media player 10, and then update my MP3 player so it had the firmware to work on Vista. I tried (after going to great length to find a pc that met the specs!) to do this and wiped the entire thing clean! It became unusable. After 2 weeks, I finally managed to fix it. I got it back to its pre Vista ready state, and was ready to give up when I found out all I had needed to do in the first place was plug the MP3 player in, and Windows Media Player would find the MP3 player and transfer all my songs to it for me! So Vista is equipped to do it all, but the negative press about it convinced me that it would be an uphill struggle.

A bit of a tangent there I know, but the point of the story is meant to be that I just can not see how people are finding it difficult to use. If something tries to run on your PC, it asks you if you told it to run, or if somebody else did. That is an amazing feature in my opinion as usually the PC just fumbles along starting up everything it is told to, now its checking. I worry though that there must be plenty of software that can bypass that feature anyway.
Compatibility wise, there are patches for most things out there now that mean they will function adequately. If not there are also programs you can get which will allow you to run things properly, and I believe it also has a mode like XP does where you can load the program using XP/Windows 2000/98/95 etc mode.

If you are trying to run all your old programs, and have no intention of using any new programs in the forseeable future then stick with XP as there would be no point upgrading. But if you are unlikely to use old software, or play old games, or don't mind the slight bit of effort you may face when installing something older then Vista is brilliant. Its faster, efficient, looks nicer, I find it a lot less bug ridden than XP too. I must say I found it easy to get the basics, and I have a firm grasp of what I am doing on there now, but I definitely don't know everything that it has to offer. I love the newer versions of Microsoft programs like Word/XP/Outlook etc, they are great!

Vista all the way in other words for me, I can't stand using XP anymore. Obviously the biggest thing should be, if your PC came with XP there is no point upgrading it. Just wait until you buy a new one which will come with Vista in already. In all likelihood most new games etc wont run on a PC that is very old anyway Vista or XP.

Maybe I got a faulty system, but mine was full of holes, the firewall stopped working, the virus scan ran out of free trial days, then it stopped letting me open new windows, then it started to randomly use up memory on random stuff.

No virus, I checked, like 40 times, probably a bug seeing as I got it when it first came out(the new one is supposedly a million times better then the first Vista though)

That was probably just McAffee, since its probably one of the worst antivirus software programs out there. It will screw up your firewall, and it will install little things that slow you down to a crawl without informing you. Frankly, a free antivirus is better and those also range from craptastic to passable. So just try to uninstall the antivirus trial and get a better one. If you're buying one, I suggest Kaspersky. Not the friendliest user interface I hear but it owns every other av software out there.

To be fair Pre service pack 1 Vista sucked ass. Microsoft are dicks for releasing an OS that was still in beta to the market, but its a model that works for them since eventually most everyone is going to be using the software anyway. They like free beta testers. Eventually , they will fix the major problems and people will be happier with it. Happened with 98 and XP, why not the same with Vista.

I actually made the switch to Vista with my newest computer a few months ago, and aside from having to learn to operate differently while navigating within Vista, which was actually a quick process, not hard at all....I haven't had any problems with Vista, and actually quite like it, despite all the bad reviews I had heard from people prior to making the switch.

As for downloaded games...well, they all download perfectly, and play perfectly too. Some better than they did while using XP. Don't know why others have problems with games and Vista, but I haven't had any issues with games not working, with my computer freezing up, with using multiple windows, or any other kind of problems.

When I asked the guy I bought my computer from, who I trust, because he is a family friend...he said that most problems with Vista happened because the computers running them didn't have enough RAM to support Vista initially. When discussing this with others who had had problems with Vista, they thought that might have been a good reason, as their computers had been running on less than 2GB RAM, which is what I was told was the minimum you should have to ensure Vista runs properly.

And I definitely have that :)
