Why so rude...?

Villiana 12 years, 11 months ago at Jul 3 16:46 -
Why some people on the "listal.com" are so rude? I make a list of things that I like, and which aren't (this is a portal designed for this) and in return gets the comment that the list is stupid, and that I should find a hobby other than watching movies (yes, today I got a comment like this, because I put include "Drive" down the list than "Crazy, Stupid, Love") Why? I understand that each person is different and has a right to his opinion, but why so rudely and critically? Everyone has their own taste and has a right to it. One thing people like and others don't like. I don't understand why this meanness in people.

The real question is: What's with people in general? Yesterday, I was trying to get off an airplane when someone from way back behind where I was sitting shoved me off the aisle and said, "You will humor me in all my petulant cantankerousness, for I am unwilling to consider that other people have conscious existences! You see, I prefer to be an epic irritant, because I am a lazy, entitled wretch disinclined to trouble himself to take the effort or experience the humility involved with bettering my person! I will continue to push others, give them wet willies, stab them on occasion, and scuff their expensive shoes - no matter what the cost, this is my promise, for I am a Grade-A bother!" He then stormed off, doing a few cartwheels and tipping the stewardess with lint from his seat.

That's just teh rudeness. =[

Unfortunately some people feel a need to post rude comments instead of keeping their opinions to themselves. I'm fine with someone disagreeing with my opinion, but when someone feels a need to insult me because we don't agree I have no time for them. So I wouldn't take it too personally. ;) As you said, we all have our own tastes & it'd be nice if others would be (more) respectful of them. Sad to hear that happened to you, Villiana. I'm sure whenever I make my list for 2011 that person will take issue with me as well since Drive fell short of greatness for me too.

@PK - Very entertaining, thank you for the laugh. :)

Thank you for your response.
@the giraffe - I also understand that someone does not agree with me and he is entitled to, but not in a way to make someone hurt and humiliate him. For sure I will not stop watching movies because of one opinion. I know that my taste is different and is definitely weird, but it does not answer me right for watching movies and sharing my impressions.
@Pumpkinate - two days ago to the store unhappy customer came in and started yelling at the woman at the checkout. He shouted that he counted wrong, that she is cheating, he would call television. Store manager came and it turned out that the client read the wrong price... More calm and composure in this world would be nice.
I apologize for all the mistakes, my English is not the best.

Hum, I doubt that I would win the "Miss Congeniality" of Listal but as far as rudeness. In my own experience Listal is rather tame. I have been on forums that openly mock other members and develop into cliques that war with other factions on the site. Then branch off into other forums that post about all the nasty things said by one side or another. So far I haven't come across the "I hate Listal" blog. There are some pretty evil blogs dedicated solely to mocking the game "The Sims" and their official forum. The Sims! I only fear what kind of "Hello Kitty" hate blogs might exist. Thankfully, I don't read Japanese... so I can continue to live in a sheltered world where "Hello Kitty" is cute and sweet.

People don't really want to think beyond 'black and white' and 'good and evil'. We work very hard to keep people close to us that validate our opinion on the world. It is a simple and carefree world where I can meet a person ask them their favorite flavor of ice cream and determine if a person is worth talking to or if that person is some sort of substandard life form who likes strawberry ice-cream and should be put behind bars or just killed right there in the street.

It makes for a nice system of never finding any common ground in any conversation.... why think about something when it is easier to rant and tell someone that they are wrong. Why should I have to think about why I like something and risk discovering that I might be wrong. Or more horrifying... what is something can be both good and bad?!!? Well, the world would end I tell you... cats sleeping with dogs! It is just too horrible to think about!

I personally loved the movie "Drive" but I'm also very aware of the fact that much of my feelings about the film are based on my cultural and life experiences. It takes actual effort to expand your personal view of the world, learn about other cultures and other opinions. Not that many people are going to willingly go out of their way to discover that what they love, admire or believe in might be flawed.

At the end of the day it's worth getting angry about what faceless strangers on the internet think.

However I've rarely encountered cases on Listal of people freaking out over difference of opinion. Plus what good would it be if everyone's personal top films lists where identical.

jaytoast is right about how chill Listal is. What I've experienced is that on forums where the rules are stricter, the tension is much higher. Listal isn't strict. Fortunately, this fosters an environment where users aren't always on edge instead of one where little insignificant things get you suspended.

There are always people who are going to remove their index fingers, replace them with pipe cleaners, and dust off the toboggan. That's just a fact of life. But Listal's a pretty good place to be, from my experience.

People are worse online because they can hide behind anonymity. That is why every site is abundant with trolls. I am sorry that happened to you, and I hope you are not discouraged. I know that I am sensitive myself, and it does hurt when people are rude to me, but I take it with a grain of salt.

But-! But-! But-! But - PK *is* my real name! First, middle, last - the whole shawarma.
I know that I am sensitive myself, and it does hurt when people are rude to me, but I take it with a grain of salt.

I'm hypersensitive too. My blue pet parakeet frequently takes advantage of this by uttering grade school potty language which causes me to faint, after which he takes over the house and parties with the neighborhood avian community while "I'm Like a Bird" by Nelly Furtado blasts in the background. Eventually sweet old Mrs. Mollyton from across the street comes in and chases everybirdy out, scolding Blueberry and reviving me with one of her homemade mincemeat pies.

The point being: keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer, BUT make sure your enemies are locked in a cage.

People are rude everywhere. But online, they know they are not face to face with the person so there are no immediate sanctions or comebacks.

People love to hide behind the bravery of anonymity. It gives them the ability to say whatever they want without fear of actual reprisal, because their internet selves don't need to answer in person for their douchebaggery. It's the same reason people troll YouTube and hit dislike regardless of what they're disliking. Because they can. Keep doing what you're doing, Villiana, if it makes you happy!

Of course I agree with you, Fnord Prefect.
