Why are people rating movies before they are even out?

I was just putting together the my most anticipated movies of 2012 list and noticed that almost all of the movies already had a rating here. To the people that doest this i ask why? What is the point of this? We should do the same as Imdb and not let people rate the movies until they are released. It's just idiotic.

It also happens (or at least, it used to happen) in MyAnimeList as well and I never quite understood why. Maybe some people rate it by mistake, maybe they're just silly. It's a mystery to me.

I've asked several members who have done this in the past and the usual answer is "I know I'll love it."

I asked that too one who had rated Saw 3D 1/10 months before it came out. I got no answer.
People are strange.

Maybe they are rating based on how much they want to see it
They should make a list then. :-P

This annoys me too. It also annoyed me on MAL and especially on imdb. I don't really notice the ratings on listal because I don't find them all that relevant anyway. That being said the small number of total ratings does make these pre-votes even worse. Can't listal make it impossible to rate stuff that isn't out?
I know I wanted to rate Scream 4 a 9 just for existing, but I managed to fight off the impulse till after I've watched it. It's not THAT hard.

I think it is kind of lame to do such a thing but it happens, indeed.
I have noticed something similar with people rating all the movies with, let's say Paul Walker, with 0.5 star because they think he is worthless even though they haven't see the concerned movies.
They are no rules for rating and, unfortunately, you don't need to see the movies before rating them...

well people expect more from actors and movie sequels about entertainment....so they vote movie which r soon to release or in still working condition...

This happens on gamestop and it is a mystery to me as well. If there are no rules for rating something before it comes out, then at least all of the "pre-release" ratings should be automatically erased when the game or movie is actually available.
I think the people most likely to pre-vote on a movie or game are those who will probably give it a high rating anyway. So when you see a 5 star rating around the time a movie comes out, you may be led to believe that everyone likes it when in fact you've actually been tricked by an internet army of fanboys.

Is there any way we can trace the identities of these mystery raters through their IP addresses, then hunt them down and ruthlessly murder them with a Listal lynchmob for their crimes against statistics?

I imagine it would be a mere matter of hardcore coding to automatically make it so that one can't rate items with release dates not yet reached. This might get tricky since anyone can simply edit the item for this, though I think it will hinder most people and at some point I locking a release date could be added for mods or something.

I with GA on this, evolution at it's finest.
