1. It is inconsiderate to others. Try to think about what you are saying on the boards before you post because people whose first language is not English may not understand chat speak, and so they are left out of the conversation.
2. It can be incoherent. Even to people whose first language is English, typing words in an odd manner may render what you are trying to say unclear. This can put members off replying to you because they may not see it as a proper discussion.
3. It is abuse of the English language. There are members who dislike chat speak because it is manipulation of the rules of the English language which are there so that everyone can understand what you are saying. If you get into the habit of it then there is a chance that in the future you will end up restricting your spelling abilities.
4. It makes you sound less intelligent. Seriously... do you think that typing that way in the future will get you anywhere fast? Especially in a job involving typing...
5. You have plenty of space. Chat speak is meant to be for shortening words so that people may fit them into a text message, etc., but here there is plenty of room for what you need to say. Therefore there is no need to miss out letters. Exchanging of letters (i.e. z for an s) is pointless also because that isn't even saving any time.
Those are some of the main reasons. Obviously there are some forms of chat speak which people will use because it makes it easier to express something, or it will genuinely save time. Examples include:
LOL = laugh out loud
IMHO = in my honest opinion
Don't be discouraged by all this. Members will understand if English is not your first language, or if you make the odd spelling mistake, and most teenagers will hopefully grow out of using chat speak. If you are wanting to be taken seriously, it is worth considering though. ;)
