Feel that they must follow what every one else is doing? you dress like the people in your group, you act like them, you do the same things they do weather you want to or not why is it because if you don't they won't like you anymore. What are you a little kid. Be yourself.

They follow people to see what kind of lists, and images, are out there... You can't track ALL list or images down yourself you know! (on Listal)

But if you mean in the more general discussion, I agree with you :P

I follow to noone. Most of my class listen to rock or metal or pop or something, but I listen to punk rock, grunge, rock, heavy, metal, comedy, shamanistic rock and almost everything I hear, I'm that diverse.

I don't also have any clothes that are "pop" or "hip". Sure, I've had sometimes to act like some of my friends, but otherwise I'd be left alone in the 5th grade.

Yeah, you can follow somebody, if you also have a mind and soul of your own.

Matal, don't horse shit people. There is no chance you are an individual, you have got to be emulating somebody somewhere. If you dress "punk rock" or "grunge" etc that is copying that genre.

I follow a genre too. It's called comfort. It its comfortable, I'll wear it. But seriously, if you are really not following a trend or whatever, you are often found alone. And the friendships you make in this way are tenuous at best. So the way I see it, you follow nothing and hope someone goes along with you, or you can make some friends based on what you like.

Umm this is called conformism its jsut natural to feel like you can be "let in" or liked by others in your or younger or even older age group it is usually meant to feel accepted

Nods,

it is a known fact that most people that are different are usually hated and outcasted. It's a very human thing to want to be accepted. And to get accepted, one usually needs to conform.

Take the high school environment for example. A new student, new to the school may need to change a few things just so he or she can fit in. If they don't, they'll usually be labelled as strange and not very well liked. So sometimes conformity is a necessary thing.

However, I think, that conforming should only be to an extent. We should be on our own minds of things. Like iPods for example. Sure they're good, but are they really? Are people only getting them because everyone else has one?

Also, another question is raised with this topic, to what extent are our choices really our own? Media has us all pretty much brainwashed to the extent that, even our favourite colour and shampoo reference isn't our choice at all but someone else's.

I think what we should be saying, is that, People shouldn't give in to peer pressure.

It is funny, most people do conform, but I feel like that people who become more cultured are less likely to conform because they are more aware of the world around them and what is in that world. With that enlightenment, they are able to decide what they like more and like less. No matter what you do or how you act, there is always someone who is going to be like you in various ways, but if you are a cultured and educated person, I feel you are less likely to follow others and beat to the sound of your own drum. For example, I love jazz which most people my age do not, but I also do listen to the hot hits radio station so I know what other people like. I read the Harry Potter novels because my a lot of people told me they are great, but I'm also reading Kafka books for my own pleasure. I watch foreign art house films from the 50s because I enjoy, but I don't hesitate to go to a bad romance flick when my girlfriend wants me to. I wear t-shirts out to parties because they are comfortable, but I do not wear any from my organizations because I'm instructed not to by my superiors. I hope some of that made sense haha.
