Who is the Best?

siesmicforce 11 years ago at Apr 26 11:09 -
A lot of my friends think The Beatles were
the best from the 1960's.
I personally like The Rolling Stones.
Who is your choice of 'the best' from
the 1960's?

The Beatles, yeah. There were a lot of good bands, but I like them the best.

I was always a Stones fan moreso than the Beatles but I like them, as well. I'd choose the Stones over them any day though.

I always loved Bob Dylan's 60's albums, but as far as a whole band was concerned it would be hard to find one that put out more classic albums in the 60's than The Beatles.

The Yardbirds overall, for having developed the sound of electric guitars, and The Kinks' s originality and arrangements of the songs.

The Best of the 60's? Depends on what years you are specifically referring to.

As for Rock, I'd easily say The Beatles from about 1967-1970, with The Rolling Stones in their prime closely behind them, and then Hendrix's dominating albums a slot under them. Another great mention would be Cream, who's first three albums are great and hard to ignore back when Clapton was in his prime.

For R&B, it's a toss up between the usual suspects from Motown that dominated the early 60's and the Soul sounds of Ray Charles. You can easily squeeze James Brown in this category if you prefer his early sounds over the heavy Funk elements of the later years in the closing of the decade (he didn't reach his prime till 1969 at least).

For Jazz, I have to go with Miles Davis or John Coltrane here in a toss up. Miles' Second Great Quintet lineup was truly phenomenal and this was the decade where he truly hit his prime as an innovative trumpet player. Everything Miles released in the early to mid 60's is worth every penny, but when he started trying to appeal to a younger audience and went Acid/Psychedelic Rock he started to lose his focus and a huge step. Coltrane is still the top dog when it comes to unique soloing and putting together solid masterpieces of albums, and unlike Davis, he died before he could truly embarrass himself with a horrible album.

For Folk music it's easily going to be between Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell, and some of the other LA singer/songwriters that came out in the early years of the 60's.

The 60's hands down was the best era of music in my opinion. You can't really just put one band on the pedestal without going into all the other genres and the great things we received from each of them.

I'd go for the Who, more straight rock than the Beatles and just as good at what they do. Close runners-up are the Kinks, not always so consistent but nevertheless underrated in my opinion.

Doubtlessly the post-'65 Beach Boys. Pet Sounds is an obvious masterpiece, and the remaining SMiLE sessions are the greatest things ever recorded

Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd is the best for me.

For me, it's kind of a toss up between The Beatles and The Beach Boys. I love both, but it has been cited that The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album was influenced by The Beach Boys Pets Sounds.

cteddiesgirl, Brian Wilson still says that when he first heard The Beatles late 1965 Rubber Soul album,he was so blown away and impressed with it,that it motivated him to make the Pet Sounds album and he even says that he thinks Rubber Soul is better than Pet Sounds. He played with a Little Help From My Friends on the piano on a 1995 great Beatles Nightline tribute show that had all different types of music artists on,and he said i just love that song and he said he said what countless other well known music artists have said, that he thinks Lennon and McCartney were the two greatest song writers of the 20th century.

Here in The All Music Guide's Beach Boys biography,it says that Brian Wilson had a nervous break down after he heard Sgt.Pepper.

And it has been reported other places that he was also devastated after he heard John's Strawberry fields Forever on his car radio when he was driving and he had to pull over because The Beatles beat him again.

And The Beatles are the greatest band ever,

The Beatles were overall probably the best, but Led Zeppelin came in later in the decade and immediately started kicking ass with their first two albums.

Miles Davis should get some love, too.
