What's the best trilogy ever?

What, in your opinion, is the best trilogy ever?

Kinda tricky question, depending how strict your definition of trilogy is. For example, my personal favorite trilogy these days is Alien/Aliens/Alien 3. But if you throw Alien Resurrection into the mix, it's no longer a true trilogy. Let alone the AVP's.
The original Star Wars trilogy ranks a close second, (and in the grand scheme of things possibly remains my favorite) but of course Lucas f-ed that all up year later by releasing 3 more films. But I think most anyone would still consider episodes IV thru VI as their own official trilogy.
Then there's LOTR, which remains a true trilogy by the strictest definition, and actually features my highest cumulative star-rating of any of them.
Ha, I've got a whole list that breaks it all down:

I agree with Xanadont...so many to choose from in different genres.
My favorite though has to be the Alien trilogy...'get away from her you bitch'

Lord of the Rings, is there a doubt? :p
How everything ties in together, how every movie perfectly feels like it is part of this bigger thing, and the epic tale of good vs evil in a fantastic setting never before seen revolutionizing the way movies are made.
So, yeah, LotR.
PS: Depending how The Dark Knight trilogy ends, I might have a new favorite.

existen dos trilogias de impacto el señor de los anillos y star wars auneuq no dejaria de lado a transformers y star trek

Star Trek 2,3 and 4 are considered a Trilogy within the series, it is rather good though I think I prefer Lord of the Rings more and the original trilogy of Star Wars as never released properly on DVD or Bluray. I reckon Toy Story could be considered a trilogy now too.
I think Back to the Future is the most fun but The Man with No Name trilogy (A Fistful of Dollars (1964), For a Few Dollars More (1965) and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)) is the best.

My favorite trilogy is The Godfather.Excellent script,actors-legends and amazing direction!!!

You liked the third one? Even with the whole Vatican conspiracy angle?

The Godfather I and II are two of my favorites movies. The third no so much but still is a very good movie.

Yes, I agree with Propelas... I would chose The Godfather as well and even though the 3rd didn't quite live up to it's expectations, it nevertheless was great!
The other I might go with The Evil Dead Trilogy and maybe The Dollars Trilogy!

If there's a trilogy that can be made with 2 movies, that one will be the best.

As Dr. Sheldon Cooper might say, that is an inherent technical impossibility as the "tri-" prefix in trilogy means "three", from the Latin "tres" or Ancient Greek "τρία". What you are referring to is a duology.

Thanks for the info, Rylvan but I think that Veed meant something else... I guess!

The greatness of the first two films in the Godfathers trilogy more than makes up for what is the third film which in my mind is nowhere near as bad as many think though it has a lot to live up to in comparison.

Lord of the Rings followed by the Matrix

Lord of the Rings veeery closely followed by the original Star Wars

Definitely Lord of the Rings, followed closely by the original Star Wars, and Indiana Jones (does that count as a trilogy now with the addition of a 4th movie?)

Back to the Future and Indiana Jones (same question as post above: does it count as a trilogy?) get my vote. : )

The Lord of the Rings. While other trilogies such as Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and the Godfather have better individuals films than any of the LOTR's movies, it is the only trilogy pretty much perfectly crafted. Each movie is done beautifully and there fails to be any weak link throughout the series.

Not sure. It's pretty close to a tie between Back to the Future and Toy Story, but if I had to choose, I'd probably go with Back to the Future.

The Lord of the Rings would have to top this list as the most near-perfect trilogy ever created.
The Godfather trilogy would have to come next. I agree the third movie pales in comparison to the first two, but that is because the bar had been set so high.
The Indiana Jones Trilogy would be number three, even though the second movie was kind of weak, they made up for it with the third. I don't consider Crystal Skull a part of this series. They should have left it at The Last Crusade.
The original Star Wars Tilogy. The second movie was the strongest, with the first introducing the story and the third wrapping things up. The third is the weakest here, and again, I don't consider the 3 prequels to be part of this series. They were only Lucas' attempt to milk the franchise and are totally irrelevent. It took him 3 pictures to answer one simple question: How did Aniken become Darth Vader?
The Back to the Future films were fun, but I lost interest midway through the second movie. That is not to say it is not a good trilogy.
No one has mentioned the John Ford Calvery trilogy with John Wayne.
The Dollars Trilogy is good, but I thought the first one was kind of slow. The second one was the most entertaining to me. It had a better story than the others.

When The Dark Night Rises come out, we will finish the best trilogy: Nolan's Batman.

I would say Twilight
But the third movie is actually two-parts, so it doesn't count

I think The Lord of the Rings is the best trilogy ever, though the original Star Wars movies stil has a nostalgia factor form e (as I grew up with them) that can't be beat.

The Lord of the Rings definitely. Also the original Star Wars trilogy, The Dollars Trilogy and The Evil Dead Trilogy.

The 1970's there were two : The Godfather films and the Star War films, If you can seperate them good luck as there wer all good in their own ways.
In the 00's then it has to be Lord Of The Rings, and it will take a miracle to surpass this series of films, closely followed by The Matrix films.

Lord of the Rings is so over-rated.
For pure entertainment and a story that continues through the series can't go past Pirates of the Caribbean

Until I view The Dark Knight Rises, I will have to go with The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Peter Jackson deserved all of the accolades that he received. It was, in my opinion, perfect. Star Wars was my original choice, but I think that I may need another viewing. I just don't trust my nostalgic feelings as of late.

Back to the Future And TLOTR

I thought of another trilogy. Although Park Chan-wook's Vengeance Trilogy doesn't have the formal presentation of others, the films do have thematic links. They are definitly worth looking into for the film buffs.

1.Visconti's The German Trilogy
2.Fassbinder's BRD Trilogy
3.Kieslowsky's The Three Colors Trilogy
4.Star Wars
5.The Godfather
2.Fassbinder's BRD Trilogy
3.Kieslowsky's The Three Colors Trilogy
4.Star Wars
5.The Godfather

1. Star Wars IV-VI
2. Vengeance
3. Dark Knight
4. LOTR
5. Alien
2. Vengeance
3. Dark Knight
4. LOTR
5. Alien

1) LOTR
2) Star Wars
3) Alien
4) Back to the Future
5) GodFather
2) Star Wars
3) Alien
4) Back to the Future
5) GodFather

Sadly, I am not looking forward to the Hobbit. It looks like another misinterpreted version of Tolkiens work. I loved LOTR films, but I didnt like the ending to the last one.
So I think Aliens is my favourite 'quadriology'? (sp?). Funnily enough, we watched the one with Charles Dance in the other night.
