What is happening ?!

mrhoundoom 9 years, 4 months ago at Dec 4 21:22 -
This does not happen much on the website, but every single time i go to other forums or blogs or even youtube to see opinions about new trailers/teasers, all i see nowadays is people complaining about something, example, jurassic world trailer comes out, from two minutes of footage somehow people know and say that its gonna be the same thing that we have seen before (i thought that was exactly what people wanted)and that its gonna suck, then star wars comes out, and from the whole trailer all people care is about the practicality of a stupid lightsaber, like somehow that same lightsaber is gonna ruin the movie for them, same thing happening now with terminator.

my question is, what is happening to modern viewers? have we really reached a point where its impossible to satisfy modern society?

Nothing is happening. That's the internet. Talk to people in the real world for opinions that aren't absurdly underlined and extreme.

i would assume that too if i already didin´t have real world examples, and the only reason why it bothers me is because you kinda end up being a minority in a world of unsatisfied people

I mostly mean that you should talk to people who have little exposure to the internet, period. With social media that's a bit hard. The mob mentality of the internet (read one thing from enough people, begin to agree with it on a subliminal level) carries over to it's users in the world too.

PS. People are also upset about these particular films because they directly resonate with their childhoods but completely fail to match up with what the actual perceived magic in those experiences as a kid was. Partially because the audience aren't kids any more, partially because the movie isn't the same. People have always had difficulty adjusting to the continuation of whatever franchise. It's the same thing every time a new Bond-movie comes out. "This time they'll ruin it for sure!" etc. It has nothing to do with people being more demanding, it's about people being dumb and not knowing why they think a certain way.

PPS. That being said both Jurassic World and especially Genisys just look like bad movies, but that has little to do with why most people call the trailers garbage online.

to a degree i agree with you, but in other ways i disagree mostly because my personal experience tells otherwise, i also agree with people being fearfull as to where their favourite franchises are going, im a jurassic park fanboy myself i literally grew up with it, star wars not so much but i still like the films, but that does not really justify hating on a movie six months before its even out based on not even two minutes of footage, or even just because a design of a freakin lightsaber.

we have always had mob mentality on the internet its a natural ocurrence due to anonimosity but that same mentality seems in the last few years to have gotten worse and it seems to be spreading to much more than just online spaces, that is bad because hollywood has to adjust itself to these specific conditions, look at godzilla for example one of the best movies in my opinion this year mostly because it "dared" to have a slow pacing and to not show us the goodies right away in a world where we are used to see stuff right away without any mystery, and look what happened, there was still a lot of people who liked it dont get me wrong , but the majority didin´t like it that much because it supposely didin´t show the monsters enough, when in reality it did, just not in the way they were expecting. And thats the only reason why its a worrying problem because eventually it does have the power to change the industry, but that may be my vision on things, of course the problem does not take sleep from me but on the long run it may become a very bad thing.

It's not like people are only complaining, those are just the only comments you see. People who look forward to things don't post about it constantly online.

Not to mention with things like Star Wars, there is no way to make the entire fanbase happy, especially when the fanbase is filled with purists who have very specific expectations.

There is no reason to read comments though. Literally no reason. There is never anything good there. People say terrible things. Completely average, normal people say terrible things. About everything. You would be doing yourself a favor to not even bother.

i agree with that when it happens online, but like i said i have been progressively noticing that it has been spreading to outside the online medium, maybe im talking to the wrong people, i don't know, but the thought that in the future even the real world will be filled with hungry trolls does not make me happy.

@Mackenzi: "Completely average, normal people say terrible things. About everything."

I agree with the statement above. Human beings are sick creatures.

@mrhoundoom what is happening to modern viewers?

"We have fallen upon evil times, the world has waxed old and wicked."

--King Naram Sin of Chaldea, 3800 years B.C.

:D

That ancient quote is not so certain, actually, but people have always been thinking that "modern times" are bad.

"Times are bad. Children no longer obey their parents, and everyone is writing a book."

--Marcus Tullius Cicero

Back to cinema goers: there have always been people complaining about the silliest things. The only thing is, now anyone can easily voice their opinion on the net.

But, there is a bright side to that, too. For instance, you can read some interesting ideas by ordinary people from all over the world, while in the pre-Internet era you would only be able to read a few reviews on printed magazines or hear opinions just from your real-life acquaintances.

in that sense you are right, i guess it never ocurred to me that people have always have said that, im either talking to the wrong people or looking in the wrong places, its just that my weak spot has always been non-justified criticisms, but again we are talking about the internet here so...

but dont get me wrong, like i said, i dont lose any sleep thinking about it, its just that i was curious about what other people "stand" in it

Yes I can see unjustified criticisms at times. I also see unjustified enthusiasm other times! But if you look at the big picture, the extremes often cancel one another. For instance, read the IMDb.com threads and user reviews, there are all kinds of absurd remarks, silly haters, the fans, and so on. Also, there is the fact that people with *strong opinions* tend to make themselves heard more vigorously than the balanced people.
But if you look at the average IMDb ratings that sum up all the viewers, or look at the most voted user reviews, all in all they usually do "make sense", more or less. :)

yeah i guess thats true, "the loud ones are always the ones that you hear first" so to speak.

Also, while there is enthusiasm, there is only so many ways to say "I can't wait to see it. It will be great. Best movie of the year!"

Meanwhile criticism is more nitpicky, so there simply is more to say. And it sparks debate, so that's more posts right there. It can also be very funny - for example the Star Wars lightsaber reaction meme. I could not give less fucks about that Star Wars trailer, but I looked up more lightsaber pictures after seeing some hilarious ones on io9.

Does this negative reaction bother me? Not in the slightest. I don't mind random people saying these remakes/sequels will suck. If I want to get an opinion on a movie, I go to some sites I like or listen to a podcast done by people whose opinion I trust. While everyone can say their opinion in these internet happy days, it is also possible now more than ever to have access to those opinions you do want to hear.
