What are points for?

at the moment, its just for bragging rights, and to encourange participation. ;)

That's stupid.

It works, though. On me, at least. I'm a sucker for pointless competition.

i like the point thing
i finde it to be intertaining

You're the greatest.
I think the point system is a good idea. A bit competition is always good and for some it's a motivation to rate more things or write reviews which is good for all.
I mean there are always people that try to be the best a bit toooo much but that also happens to forums etc with point systems/ranks. You can't do anything against it.

I like the points system :) I probably wouldn't have bothered so much with rating and tagging my things if the points hadn't been there.

I think there should be some sort of minimum word limit for reviews. Mentioning no names, people are dishing our really useless reviews in order to get themselves some of these meaningless points.
Deleted user

True. I wouldn't call something like "This album/dvd/tv show is great!" a review...

I hear what you're saying Grand Assault. It is a pain to spend time writing a proper review that actually gives an insight into the product and find that someone else has just typed whatever few words that came into their head at the time. *grumbles*

I have, to date, written just three reviews. None of them quickies.
I wouldn't just type a few words just to gain points!

Personally, I write the "reviews" or comments exactly the way I would say it if someone asked me what I thought. When someone asks "did you like the movie/book/whatever?", they're not looking for a diatribe or thesis. I personally just want a quick idea of positives and/or negatives.

I am looking for a little more substance than, "I liked this"...it was great, it sucked, etc.
That isn't enough for me, and a waste of my time.

Then it's just a matter of skimming the reviews and ignoring the ones that are not "meaty" enough for you.
Deleted user

Well, short reviews aren't bad at all. If someone's able to tell the good and maybe bad points of an item in a few sentences then that's fine for me. But just something like "i love this tv show" without any explanation or further information... that's not a review in my opinion :)

suggestion: let's convert points.... TO CASH! ;)
please? lol
please? lol

Sure, Prelude. You want it in Yen? :P

haha, let's convert ranks to cash :P

I'd prefer editing privileges, but I think it might still be too easy to game the system (with effort). I know I have plenty of boo-boos that I'd like to correct in the stuff I've entered manually and alot of the auto-magically imported stuff could use touch-ups too.

actually, that's not a bad idea. more points = more edit privileges, almost like moderator status. i feel like slapping some people after I dug and found a high rez vintage 1960s movie poster, only to find out a few weeks later some bozzo set default back to a blurry DVD image from Amazon. lol

I'm not sure I agree... considering how easy it is (generally speaking) to rack up the points, it doesn't quite seem like a viable solution.
For instance, I could have joined the site today and rated movies for the next two days... but it doesn't mean I have any more right to edit anything than someone who got their points through increasing their collection, reading/writing reviews and generally participating in the site structure.

Points may not be the way to earn editing privileges, nor a moderator status as I'm pretty sure Tom wants to be independent in maintaining the site (which is quite a good idea at the moment). I gained a lot of my points surprisingly fast and it could easily be abused. The editing system that is being implemented seems adequate so far, so lets see how it is expanded.
I'm sure Tom will think up something nice to do with points soon. After all the big problems and changes are tackled, of course. Perhaps they could earn small things such as the ability to create a sub-title for yourself for use on the boards? A forum I am part of has that for posts and it is a nice feature for long-time posters. Or we could have a system like Newgrounds where members gain access to "secrets" after reaching a certain point level? Anyway, I can definately wait for any changes whatever they may be. :) (Though I wouldn't say no to the cash. :P)

Voxy, I respectfully disagree. Anyone who can crack the top 25 (first page when viewing members, sorted by listal points) has contributed a ton to this site. and if someone goes and tags 6,000 items in two days (to get 12,000 points), they deserve a bow and respect on here. And if someone 'abuses' the system to get 10,000+ points, i say let them abuse it, every point means they've helped the site grow.
As it stands, for popular movies, listal has a lot more actors/actresses images as well as more popular posters than IMDB has. The area where we lack is IMDB's complete database of all movies, which might be an unachievable goal.

I dunno, 100 crappy, one line or less reviews, for instance, wouldn't be a boon. Which isn't to say that some one or two line reviews wouldn't be adequate. I know drivel when I see it though and there's a fair amount of drivel...

Then Prelude, it would come down to what constitutes "being at the top". I've gained the top 100 in a week, but you're right, I've been steady at this number despite my "contributions" for quite a while.

And don't forget friend referrals. They can rack up a lot of points and don't really add anything to the site without any contributions. Again I will push for the quality over quantity argument. ;)

I don't think abusing the points system is really allowing the site to grow. Literaly, a review saying 'tea is shit' adds something to the site, but if I stumbled across that as a review when I first arrived at Listal, I wouldn't have stuck around for very long. Certain reviews could be compared to spam emails really. Sure they add something to your inbox so they must be a good thing, right? :/
