we need MOVIE variety

right now, the 'Explore' feature which is neat just goes from #1 most watched downwards, but its creating a very skewed result because casual users just use it briefly and then give up, and maybe add some films manually, but it causes the most watched items to keep growing exponentially each time people use 'Explore'.
I mean, if i had a nickel each time I saw someone with a list that goes something like this: "matrix, Pirates, LOTR series, shrek, nemo, monsters, spiderman" and nothing else, i'd be rich. Don't tell me none of them have seen Wizard of Oz. or It's a Wonderful Life. unless they're actively search for, or people keep using Explore for days and days, they simply won't add it to their list.
So I suggest we find ways to add variety to help people find movies they love or want to see.
Idea #1: add 'upcoming films' which will show what's coming out each weekend.
Idea #2: add 'current box office hits' which will show that week's top 10 films at box office
Idea #3: make area where people can post custom lists they want to share with the public. right now, its flipping impossible to find such lists. I've made a list of IMDb Top250 sorted in correct rank order, and I'm almost done a list of '300 Greatest Films', sorted by year of release. And I know people or reviewers have lots of lists out there, such as 'AFI's 100 top films', or 'Best French movies', or 'Best Czech movies', or 'Best War Movies', etc.. I think if lists got more advertised on the Overview page, it would help people explore more unique films rather than just the Watched, Wanted, and Top Rated films we have now. The idea of Lists are endless. "top box-office hits of all time". "Oscar Winners". "BAFTA winners". "Golden Globe winners". "Cannes winners." etc etc..

For example, as I mentioned, I already made 2 lists, but unless you have me added as a friend AND then go looking up my profile page, or if I start advertising the page on the forums, nobody will ever know this custom list even exists. :(

Wouldn't the problem with upcoming releases or box office hits be the region? Movies don't all come out at the same time around the world, and the number one movie in the US is not necessarily the same as in India.
How would do you compensate for that? Because I certainly wouldn't find it appealing or fair to see only numbers and lists for the US or the UK... and it seems like a lot of work and sources to provide information for every region or country on Listal.

Voxy, you're missing the point. It's not to keep accurate track of each region's top films, it's just a tool used to put new and fresh movies to our screens, rather than always seeing the same movies (Matrix, LOTR, etc..)

Here's another List I've made that would be useful for everyone to know, but short of advertising it in forums, nobody can see it.

Then wouldn't a random movie generator do the same thing?
Or:
Last five movies that were rated
Last five movies that were reviewed
Last five movies that were added to a list (not necessarily just the favourites)

Tom said he tried to randomize the 'explore' feature but that it would've slowed the site down a lot, which is why it just goes thru the films in sequential order instead.
perhaps split 'explore' movies into several sub-categories:
'Explore by decade' would go thru top films from selected decade.
'Explore by genre' would go thru top films with certain key tags, such as comedy, action, drama, thriller.
'Explore lesser known films' would go sequentially as it does now, but would start say at films with 100 hits or less, and go from there.
'Explore randomly' would make a random style, but you can limit it maybe only 50+ hits so entire database doesnt get randomized, just the top 1/4 of it?

New ways to explore the site is a high priority (probably one of the highest) I particularly want a page that changes all the time rather than the current explore page which doesn't change that much. Suggestions on content which constantly changes would be good (examples : recent reviews, recent lists, recent videos)
I removed recent lists before because I thought they were mostly mainly pretty boring, I definitely want to highlight interesting lists.
I will reply with more depth later.

Perhaps if we were able to give votes for the lists then we would be able to distinguish the good from the bad. Although, with things like "Last 10 watched" these can be constantly changing and not really something that the votes may acurately show.
