Waiting for a report button

tartan_skirt 18 years ago at Apr 27 21:46 -
Ok, this is just getting annoying. Tom, we need that report button.

People like this who post things like this. I am bloody getting tired of seeing that kind of stuff popping up all the time. The groups are becoming full up with rubbish, and nothing is being done to moderate any of it.

I suggest that a warning system be introduced as well. Block posting by repeat offenders for a few days, suspend accounts if it gets out of hand. SOMETHING! :(

*brings out the net*

nakeddafney.listal.com/ Those pictures are just obscene
mngmng67.listal.com/ He's naked! And his profile is filled out with the same crap.
raeh.listal.com/ I would say two of her pictures are not suitable for this site (at least)
abeautifullie.listal.com/ What. The. Heck.
loreley2007.listal.com/ I might be sick...
piperland.listal.com/ eww... not as bad, but still.
mollyishot.listal.com/
joel666.listal.com/
sammy17.listal.com/
cameronanstis.listal.com/ description... I believe I reported this before

And thats not even the people using the site for dating!

Tom, can you introduce some sort of rules list to the site, please? I'm not trying to be uptight, but this is completely spoiling the site for me.

EDIT: additions from the groups!

www.listal.com/groups/view/373
www.listal.com/groups/view/365 pure dating advert
www.listal.com/groups/view/304 spam?
www.listal.com/groups/view/306 spam?
www.listal.com/groups/view/307 spam?
www.listal.com/groups/view/322 spam!
www.listal.com/groups/view/305 ditto
www.listal.com/groups/view/310 ditto www.listal.com/groups/view/177 ditto

Remember to check all the accounts with the spam ones. Most are abandoned by the looks of it..

And of course there is the horny group which is just stupid.

I dunno, i think it's a bit easy to get carried away with censorship as well. For instant, I'd say raeh, abeautifullie, piperland, and mollyishot are not a problem, and the rest, some are obvious spam-accounts, and others are complete pervs. but to me, nudity is that: NUDITY, i.e. nipple shown, bush shown, etc. If we start policing anyone who posts an image with people in bikinis, underwear, or naked but hiding the 'money shots', I think we would be going a bit overboard. That's just my humble opinion though. What's decent to one may be pure blasphemy to another.

I say weed out spam accounts (naturally) and real nudity, and leave the rest to mature on their own.

Can we add this one to the list?
debarzack.listal.com/

I sent it in a message to you Tom, but I don't know if you got it or missed it.
tartan_skirt 18 years ago at Apr 28 12:09 -
Mature on their own? What if the account is just forgotten about and people have to see those pictures still? I'm all for freedom from extreme censorship, but honestly some form of moderation of these things are needed if the site isn't just going to attract the perverts. People will see those type of pictures and have to decide whether or not they want to be a part of a social site with that kind of crap on it. I'm very close to withdrawing from the social side myself!

I can ignore it but is that what we want? My main concern is I can no longer visit the site when my son is in the room or when I'm at work because I don't know what could be on it. Likewise I don't recommend the site to anyone I know in real life because I can't imagine what they would think at first glance. I'm sure many other members feel this way and as I've mentioned before there's plenty of dating sites out there for these folks if that's their prime goal.

Tom, what about other moderators to help you out?

Reporting is coming but the main problem is also writing the interfaces for deleting things. Once I am able to easily delete things I will be able to remove things quickly.

I have to agree with prelude in that I don't see a problem with some of the profiles pointed out, for example raeh.listal.com (Rae) has at least rated items and has customized her profile.

It is possible I could add a mature content tag in a similar way to youtube (but still disallowing porn/nudity), example for liveleak :

http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=6e32807271 (btw this content in this case isn't that bad)

I will be asking if anyone wants to help moderate
DefenderOfKnowledge 18 years ago at Apr 29 6:44 -
I dunno yall, some of those people barely slide by, but most of them totally cross the line.
tartan_skirt 18 years ago at Apr 29 19:31 -
Thanks for the update on that Tom. This is a great site and probably a favourite for me, but stuff like this is holding it back from being better.

Prelude, it begs the question if those people should be allowed to have that kind of thing as their display picture though. I noticed today that we have members as young as 10 and would you really feel comfortable with your children looking at that sort of thing? Kids can be impressionable. I know some of those people have some ratings, but that doesn't change the fact that the pictures can be disgusting to some people...

Tartan, I'll agree that nudity has no place on here. Even dating sites (plentyoffish.com) don't allow nudity. But let's not build this site geared towards the 10-year old crowd. There may be some young kids on here, but if they are, than let their parents be parents.

If a bit of skin or bikini or cleavage offends someone, then I can think of at least several dozen movie posters that would cross that line of decency as well. Or if someone posts 'I'm a horny sex addict' in their profile, all it does it exposes them to be immature losers, but I don't see how it would affect kids visiting this site.

I guess it comes to when you use your computer, I use mine mostly with others around, as mentioned earlier and so it can be a tad embarrassing to view listal when so many of the avatars & threads look like that. It makes someone peeking over your shoulder wonder what you are really up to :)

There will always be people that are offended or offensive and I can see the point of not wanting to over censor the site but what seems to be happening now and making some uncomfortable is the fact that listal is starting to appear more as a dating site. There is not just one or two questionable accounts, avatars, profiles and threads, there's many and more each day.

New users, avatars, threads and profiles that are blatantly searching for or about sex and no interest (or just a token interest) in what listal is really about seem to be coming in at a steady rate. And I think that's where the problem lies. That and it seems so outright disrespectful of what many of us thought the site truly was.

I would guess in the long run it has to do with what Tom wants in the site and what kind of crowd he would like to attract. As the site looks more and more like a dating/chat/sex site, it will attract more of that type of user and many members with a more reserved manner will find other sites to do their cataloging on, ashame as so many like the site for what it was meant to be.

Yeah, I don't want this to turn into a dating site either, inhabited by immature clowns who think it's 'kewl' to bastardize the english language. Take for example a site like flixster.com, which I absolutely despise because of those reasons, but it also kills listal in terms of how much traffic it generates. So I feel for Tom; I think it's either adapt to the mass appeal, or die.

But I think it would be better to steer it more into a style similar to spout.com, which is also a movie rating site, but targeted more towards an intellectual crowd.

I think rather than censor and ban people, Tom mentioned a 'digg-style' voting system, where crap content and reviews (and maybe even user profiles) get dropped down and out of view, and only the cream of the crop gets noticed.

I can see the problem with some posters (such as a couple of Larry Clark films that won't be mentioned), but mainly they have one essential difference. TASTE. ;) Plus, these avatars are more prominent on the site and easier to come across, while provocative posters may be a little more obscure.

I do understand that it is hard to get a balance between appealing to the masses and to specific groups, but wouldn't it be better to appeal to the latter if they are going to give constant support and actually use the full functions of the sites (which these groups may not if they are disgusted by the social side)?
chuckmuck 18 years ago at Apr 30 16:05 -
If the questionable content, profiles, avatars were less visible I'd have no problem with that, maybe split the groups again so there's a media, listal and purely social discussion area, allowing those that chose to chat it up and those that prefer themed discussion not to have to sift through the text babble. Maybe clean up avatars but allow more risky pics for profile area and slap an 18+ tag on them.

Everyone also has the option to "ban" users from contacting or friending... what if that was increased to something like "ignore", so you wouldn't see their posts, reviews, etc. Their content would be filtered so you don't have to see it.

I would like the site to sit somewhere in between sites like flixster and sites like librarything (aimed at a more intellectual audience)

LMAO

good one, Tom. Yeah, Let's try to buy up some real estate close to Flikr and Last.fm. Just keep away from 'The Gays of web 2.0'. But make sure we build up a good defense ('report button', wink wink) because the dreaded barbarian hordes from MySpace land are known for their deadly sack & pillage attacks on small coastal upstart states.
