Virus or Hacker?

Kiara Amakura 16 years, 6 months ago at Oct 22 23:47 -
Recently,my computer has been messing up.My mother also has been seeing 'messages' at the bottom of the screen.
Another thing i'd like to discuss is something called dumprep.
The other day when i was on listal pop-up windows kept popping up and it would say "WARNING!DUMPREP"
When i ended the internet explorer process using taskmanager i saw processes called 'dumprep.exe'.
Can anyone tell me if this is most likely a virus or a hacker?

I have no idea I need more information to figure out if it's a virus or a hacker. The information you gave us pertains to both virus and hacker.

It sounds like a virus considering it was running from your computer, of course that doesn't mean it's not a hacker, lol

Not enough information, but I'm leaning torwards Virus,

try a few Virus Scans, just in case, turn on your Fire Wall(and max the settings if you can) and hopefully that will work

I just searched 'DUMPREP' in Google. There appears to be a number of interesting links available from there. Could be spyware or a virus.

Do you have AVG or Norton or anything? Those are the main virus prevention programs.

Just download things like avg virus scanner (its free legally or at least used to be so there should be versions of it about) and any spyware catchers and run them on your PC, you should be fine. There is no reason a "hacker" would want your PC. If it still does it with the internet disconnected than that would be your best assurance that its not a hacker I guess? How else would they access it.
If you don't have a virus scan and don't want to download one, then

housecall.trendmicro.com/uk/

There you can do a virus and spyware scan for free without doing any downloading.

The only three programs you'll ever need:

AVG Anti-Virus (Free Edition)
Spybot Search and Destroy (gets rid of spyware)
Ad-Aware (gets rid of adware)

Also, an obvious necessity is a good firewall like Zone Alarm (Free Version).

All of these programs are free and available at www.download.com

ok thanx for the link

idk, sounds a bit like a virus. but that wouldn't really explain the messages on the screen. but i guess tht if your getting a virus protector, your good on that. but as for the idea of a hacker, well, it would be a bit more than that. you might have documents missing, or pictures moved around. so, if any of these things happen, you may have a hacker and should try to restore a link with the person while you think they are on at the same time as you.

my speaker/sound file was deleted...
Devious Phenomenon 16 years, 6 months ago at Oct 23 22:22 -
Still could be a virus, but now it's sorta sounding like it could have been a hacker,

but if they hacked you I don't see why they'd just delete the sound file...

So it still sounds more like a virus

Did you try the house call link I found for you? I googled that specially because it involved such little effort on your part to fix the problem.

Dumprep isn't a virus or a hacker attack. The dumprep.exe process is a fault logging program that is included with Windows XP and Vista. When a serious system error occurs it will create a log file that can be sent to Microsoft.

For clairfication, hackers rarely, if ever, target a single computer. It isn't worth their time. For further clarification, ad-aware and spybot are the exact same type of software. They both stop and detect spyware, adware, trojans and the like. However, its never a bad a idea to use both of the programs on the same machine. Just one at a time. It sounds like you got a bad piece of malware possibly masking itself as dumprep

Also, one more thing, if you're using the trial version of an antivirus that came with your system, eventually its going to stop updating, so either buy a real antivirus program or get a free one. AVG is good. Personally, I use avast antivirus.

Hmmm, didn't know that. The computer "specialist" I took my computer to last time recommended that I get both programs. I've been using the two for a couple of years and one seems to catch a few baddies the other didn't detect... Of course, I don't run the two programs simultaneously.
silent killer 16 years, 6 months ago at Oct 26 4:09 -
your specialist has the right idea. Even though they serve the same function , they do it in different ways. Which is why its a good idea to have both. Early on ad-aware used to detect spybot as malware. Antispyware is cutthroat shit, I tell ya.

Unlike antivirus software, antispyware software from different companies can work together nicely.

If you want to be protected on the internet use:

one antivirus program. Only one.

atleast one antispyware program

atleast one fire wall program. Lots of routers these days act as a firewall already, and windows XP SP 2 and above also have built-in firewalls, but if you're paranoid adding another software firewall will work too. Ofcourse for simplicities sake lots of people can't be arsed to add and configure yet another firewall just so they can reach the internet.

Nobody doesn't want to hack people. That would suck if should happen.
