Underated Obscure Foreign Indie SciFi Movies

xxixii 11 years, 4 months ago at Jan 1 11:16 -
I used to be a big fan of scifi but lately have missed out on many films and decided to catch up on underated obscure indie or foreign films - I do enjoy some Hollywood blockbuster types but have no real interest in franchises. I could NOT see any list showing this sort of thing so from other sources on the net I have compiled a list of potential movies to watch

Safety Not Guaranteed
The Final Cut
The Quiet Earth
Black Moon
It Happened Here
Solaris - original and re-make
Stalker
Avatar - cyber wars...not the James Cameron flick
The Invasion
Robotjox
Timecrimes....saw last night...quite good
Sleep Dealer
Alphaville
Cargo
The Returner (Japanese)
2046
Pandorum
Vanishing Waves
Avalon
Fantastic Planet
Kin Dza Dza
The Clone Returns Home
Natural City
Man Facing SouthEast
Cold Souls
Mock Up On Mu
Gantz
Another Earth
Attack the Block
Byzantium
Iron Sky
Sound of My Voice
Sunshine
The Fall
The Secret of Kells

Any other recommendations?

Here's a list of scifi I have watched...I probably have left out a few films but that should cover it all

Safety Not Guaranteed is more of a comedy/dramedy, rather than a Sci-Fi. There's nothing really 'Sci-Fi' happening, except at the end. Another Earth is the same. Pandorum might be a bit underrated, but it had 33 mil. budget :P Sunshine on the other had is good, big budget as well, but I wouldn't call it underrated (then again, it depends on a person).

Iron Sky and Solaris (remake) imo sucked.

The Fall? There's a sci-fi (supposedly) called The Falls, but The Fall (2006) is a fantasy/drama movie.

Cargo was pretty good, but good indie Sci-Fi movies are rather rare imo.

As for the list below, it's nice, though some I don't consider Sci-Fi (Triangle for instance). Anyway, I'll list a few that I can remember & thought were good :)

Repeaters, Mr. Nobody (40+ mil budget, but till recently most people haven't heard of it + it bombed at the box office), The Divide (more of a thriller), Repo! The Genetic Opera (musical/future/underrated), John Dies at the End (should be partially Sci-Fi, but I've seen it a while ago), and.. well, I can't think of any other at the moment.

As for shows, Spanish TV Series El Barco (The Boat) - though there's a lot of drama, obviously, Day Break, Defying Gravity (underrated, though it got worse near the end of the first season), & Black Mirror (it's none of this things, but it is must watch imo ;p). Maybe O Clone too, which is more of a drama filled show - www.imdb.com/title/tt0289800/ .

------

I've left out The Signal (underrated/low budget/indie), and The Happening which was.. well, unless you're a fan of Zooey, not that good :D I've forgotten The I Inside as well. The Thaw..

@Hollow Prince

thanks for your comments and suggestions - scifi can be hard to pigeonhole and inevitably there are films which are considered scifi but are not really and vice versa...just check the DVD listings and Buffy The Vampire tv series and Lord Of The Rings films are listed under scifi???? I have liked several films which can only vaguely be considered scifi...Exam, Upside Down, Perfect Sense, The Sylvian Experiments and I'm A Cyborg But Thats Okay...but imho Alien is basically a horror with a scifi backdrop BUT most people regard it the other way around

I liked The Signal and The Divide - pretty good...The Happening was a total misfire apart from a few scenes at the start where the girl stabs herself in the neck and the people just walk off tops of buildings . creepy

I wasnt that impressed with Solaris (2002 version) as imho it was just a ghost story in space with huge lapses in logic and no real pay-off...the original version seems interesting but s---l----o----w I started to watch that last night and probably watch over several days

Yes I saw some trailers for Mr Nobody and that seems interesting

I started my new list as below
www.listal.com/list/scifi-movies-seen-recently

Of the 5 I have watched so far I recommend Paprika for the wtf type feel, Timecrimes for its puzzle nature and tying things together really well, and Robotjox which was just cheesy fun

:)

True.. Moon for instance I consider a drama, rather than a Sci-Fi, though the story is Sci-Fi, or at least it's set in such environment.
As for Buffy/LOTR, I wouldn't bother checking the genre here, a lot of people that have no idea what it is can easily add their own tags - imdb is usually more accurate, and if imdb, there is other sites as well :)

Yeah, but Alien is set on a space ship, in space.. + Aliens which are usually immediately considered Sci-Fi. I agree with The Happening, it could have been a lot better.

I've forgotten to mention that although Mr. Nobody has Sci-Fi moments (for example part in the space station), it's mostly fantasy/drama :)

I've seen Timecrimes & Solaris, Paprika possibly years ago, and the other two I haven't. But the Robotjox reminds me a bit of Real Steel, by the plot.

I finished watching the original Solaris earlier this morning...IMHO too long, far too long - it has good moments and is very scifi but it doesnt necessarily make it great

I would like to see more scifi dealing with parallel universes as its a sub-genre rarely explored and I used to like the tv series Sliders (very hit and miss)...off the top of my head I can only think of Run Lola Run and Sliding Doors - both are very borderline sci-fi. I think the concept is rarely used as its a bit too complex for most people to cope with and possibly the nature of it is more suited towards a series

:/

Heh, I agree. I liked that show, or at least first 2 seasons. Fringe has parallel universes involved as well, and although fifth season (for me) wasn't great, rest of it was pretty good. Mini-series The Lost Room too.
I've been meaning to give Run Lola Run a watch for a while :P
xxixii 11 years, 3 months ago at Jan 10 18:31 -
The Lost Room was a good mini-series...Sliders was erratic to say the least...seasons 4 and 5 being meh...I even was ok with the blatant lifting of ideas in seasons 2 and 3...I haven't seen Fringe...possibly too many episodes for me to make the investment of time

According to Wikipedia the following are films/Tv series dealing with Parallel universes which maybe worth checking out

It Happened Here (1964)
Charlie Jade
Awake
The One (2001)
Crossworlds
The Lake (tv movie 1998)

Aye. I've quit Sliders after second season, without 2 main charracters it just wasn't worth watching for me. Eh, too bad, Fringe's good :)

I've seen The One, it's okay, but not great.
