I don't really count Spartacus and Lolita as Kubrick films, because he didn't have full artistic control on those, and was only allowed to do what he was told to do.

The Shining, Space Odyssey, Full Metal Jacket, and Clockwork Orange would definitely be the top 4, if not necessarily in that order.

Strangelove, The Killing, Paths of Glory, and Barry Lyndon would come next. For some reason, I didn't get blown away by Strangelove. It was good, but maybe it has become over-hyped over the years and I was expecting more, maybe.

Spartacus was a great movie, but it was a Kirk Douglas movie. He called all the shots on that one. He personally bought the option on the book for his production company and talked Universal into financing the film after lining up some stars like Olivier, Laughton, and Ustinov to commit to it. He even got black-listed Dalton Trumbo to re-work the script, giving him full screen credit for the first time after years of working under alias names. This was prompted by Douglas after seeing that Kubrik was eager to take credit for Trumbo's work.
Douglas had originally hired Anthony Mann to direct, but fired him and replaced him with Kubrick after the first week of shooting. The entire sequence at the beginning of the film where the slaves were at hard labor was directed solely by Douglas. The filming was plagued by the conflicting visions of Kubrick and Trumbo.Kubrick complained that the character of Spartacus had no faults or quirks, and he later distanced himself from the film. Despite the on-set troubles, Spartacus's critical and commercial success established Kubrick as a major director.

I hated Eyes Wide Shut

2001
The Killing
The Shining (Kubrick's genius is so great that even King's nonsense becomes gold in his hands)
Paths of Glory
Clockwork Orange (still can't match Burgess' vision)
Paths of Glory
Barry Lyndon
Lolita (great performances, but is in no way worthy of Nabokov's vision)
Full Metal Jacket (mediocre, but not without it's positives)

Eyes Wide Shut

- His best film, by a land slide. Kubrick was always interested of human sexuality and his study on the subject pretty much culminates on this last film... Eyes Wide Shut is actually pretty positive piece comparing it to his other works and a dream like structure in this is absolutely fantastic. And as it is with many of his films it's hard to tell what is happening just inside the mind of the actors and what's real.

Barry Lyndon

- Kubrick's most accomplished film visually. One of the few films I know, where narration works for the films benefit.

The Killing

- Existentialistic caper film and one of the best in the genre. I love the ending and it's subtle and poignant portrayal of coincidence

Paths of Glory

- So truthful on it's subject matter that it hurts. The ending scene is heartbreaking.

Dr. Strangelove

- Best cold war film there is. Funny as hell and the humour is pitch dark, just the way I personally like it.

2001

- Great looking eye candy, but on any philosophical level I find this one rather empty. Still, a masterpiece, but in my part mostly due it's merits in cinematography and effects, which were decades ahead of it's time.

Spartacus

- Most underrated Kubrick-film in my opinion. Probably the one great christian epic from it's era and all due the fact that it deals with faith in human condition, not faith in all above.

Clockwork Orange

- And next the most overrated one... Hipster classic so to speak. I concur with previous user. Kubrick's vision doesn't capture the idea behind Burgess' book in a manner I would hope.

Shining

- Accomplished horror piece. Nothing more. Love the musics on this one.

Killer's Kiss

- Small noir film, with exceptional use of light and shadow.

Full Metal Jacket

- Problem I have with FMJ still is that I cannot make myself believe that complete sharp change in the whole setup in the middle of the film works in this. And personally I don't even consider the training part superior. It's hilarious to a point, yes. But the essence of film and it's idea is on the second section.

Lolita

- Rough diamond. I should watch this again. But until that I consider this one Kubrick's biggest failure.

Fear and Desire

- An amateur film. Shows some talent, but is boring as hell and empty as space.

I've now seen all of his films (HERE is my list), and I'll rank them like this:

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey - 10/10
2. A Clockwork Orange - 9/10
3. Eyes Wide Shut - 9/10
3. Barry Lyndon - 9/10
5. Paths of Glory - 8/10
6. The Killing - 8/10
7. Dr. Strangelove - 8/10
8. The Shining - 8/10
9. Lolita - 8/10
10. Spartacus - 7/10
11. Full Metal Jacket - 6/10
12. Fear and Desire - 5/10
13. Killer's Kiss - 4/10

I've also re-watched a good amount of his films, as evidenced in the change of ratings from my previous list.

I need to re-watch Spartacus and Dr. Strangelove still. I haven't seen those since I was about 10 years old, and I am going off of just what I remember my opinions were back then, rather than how they would be now.

I think I missed the point with Full Metal Jacket, so I'll be re-watching that one, too.

I wonder if we can include the moon landing in this list? Watch the documentary Kubrick's Odyssey (2011). It will change the way you think or what you might remember about the moon landing and some of Kubrick's movies, especially The Shining. It also purports that he may not have died from natural causes but that is a stretch.

I have never believed in any conspiracy involving Kubrick but this documentary opened my eyes when I saw it a couple of years ago.
