too old for...

sometimes i get asked: "aren't you too old for metal/cartoons/video games etc.". recently i even read an article in a newspaper from a woman - not much older than me -, who accused her husband (!) for being stuck in puberty and on a "highway to hell" for still listening to AC/DC... personally i listen/watch/do whatever i like, without giving a rat's ass to any naysayers. still i have seen quite some people who get influenced by them and for instance hear their "inappropriate" music secretly, with nobody looking, or give up the habit at all.

did you experience the same? what is your point of view?

I get this sometimes, usually from family members. Some friends express it, but with an air of subtle disdain, and only very rarely do any of them give any direct criticism.

I'm somewhat lucky, in that my girlfriend likes many of the same things. She gets a little annoyed when I tie up the TV for days, or when I'm into a comic book or artist that's more on the erotic side of things, but nothing too bad. If anything, she's taken to pointing things out that she thinks I might like.

I think in most cases, if someone's significant other is tossing around that kind of talk, they chose their partner very poorly. That isn't to say you should like everything the other person does, but it's important to have respect for one another.

That last paragraph makes me sound really, really freakin' old. Crap.

i couldn't agree more on the partner selection. i was rather shocked that someone could dis his own partner via a newspaper, and on something absolutely harmless and personal too. i'm also in the lucky position of having a wife that shares some of my "out-of-age" (who defines it anyway) interests, but has at least some respect or understanding for the others. we wouldn't even be together if it was any different, because i value personal freedom and tolerance above anything else.

I ain't old but my brothers are already at the middle age and nothing has stopped them from playing games, they collected all the guitar hero games and rockband, it would be cool if my grandma knew how to play games, then i would play against her on gears of war 2.
no one is ever to old, well maybe...never mind, u get my point.

Age doesn’t matter, its totally irrelevant – we are all the same, some teenagers have an old head on young shoulders, whilst other elderly people still haven’t grown up yet.

The media often has an issue with new forms of entertainment, as they are normally beyond they sphere of the journalists experience. But I was there when Pong started, I’ve seen the industry grow, so why shouldn’t I enjoy a game or two? It’s no different from grown men playing with their train sets in the attic in the past. Each generation has their own form of unacceptable hobbies for adults. Why unacceptable? Because there is a social responsibility aspect to the whole issue of adults playing with toys. As you get older your responsibilities tend to increase, so it becomes harder and harder to justify the time/money spent on pleasuring yourself with such frivolously things, especially when you have a family/business/mortgage to support.

Golf is one of those acceptable games for the elderly as it’s a rich man's game and great networking opportunity! Yes video games are expensive and connected to the global community, but the media haven’t realised that yet, give them time they are young!

What's especially interesting is that "acceptable" forms of entertainment vary so wildly by culture. Japan and Europe are well-known for the numerous comics aimed at adults, while in America, comics are considered something for adolescent, nerdy boys. Same goes for video games, nearly anything involving science fiction or fantasy, and so on.

I've also run across similar thinking in a lot of my art-related classes, in that illustration or anything oriented towards realism is treated as selling out for commercial gain and devoid of artistic merit, and abstraction and expressionism are treated as the only valid forms of art.

Why does anyone have the right to tell anotherperson to grow up, it's their mind, you can't control it(no matter how OCD you flipping are)
Growing up to be a mechanical uninteresting thing, oh yeah, that sounds like a good thing, yup I'll go do that right now...
who has the right to tell you what you can and can't do, otherthen slamming a revolving door, just about anything is possible, for anyone... if you don't let age get to you it won't wear you down
Insekt, that is the joy stereotypes and cliques have brought upon the world... and also jealousy(for the art thing)... not all art is commercial gain

Pft.. You just have to be part of the right social crowds to realise that age doesn't really matter in the slightest and most of the time its all in your head. I'm 19, one of my best friends has just turned 34 and we're into very similar music and hobbies and whatnot. I also have interests that a lot of people my age would raise an eyebrow and say "what?!" at, but I couldn't care less. Sometimes I'm a total old lady at heart..

I've come to appreciate the goth music scene especially for crossing age gaps. Some of the club nights I go to have an age range from 18 to approximately 60 on any given night, and it proves that people shouldn't be separated because of age if interests are shared. There is also a big festival down in England called Whitby Gothic Weekend (which I have yet to get to, sadly) where the ages go from infant to elderly.

Screw what other people think. In the end, you're the one who enjoys yourself. And remember that a lot of people who say that enjoying younger pastimes is childish look back at thier youth and call it the "best days of their lives". So what do they have to live for, eh?

I used to get the "Aren't you too old for that?" thing from my sister and my mom. Now either they just came to terms that my tastes aren't going to change or they noticed what I'm reading and watching isn't all exactly kid friendly. Just because it's animated doesn't mean its sfw. :)

lol Tartan, I rant all the time, it's not really an old thing it's just a personality thing,
I know people who are like 12, 15, who hang out and chat with adults without being hyper or being confused about what some of them talk about
I hang out with just about anyone, 8-idk how old and I'm 15, Idc whether people think I'm young or older then I should be, people say when I'm around friends I act like a 12 year old or a 15 year old on a few energy drinks maybe, but when I'm at school I act like I'm 22, but sometimes I act 15

the thing is, I play, I talk, I socialize around friends, is that what 12 is and as soon as you're 13 you gotta stop doing that? and I am quiet and collected at school does that mean all 22 year olds are quiet and collected?(actually last I checked there are a lot of party animals that age :P) can you really fit a personality into an age?
my little brother tries to act 15 my mom always says, so is 15 talking back and thinking of the world's dumbest ideas?

I know a 70 year old guy who came down once on a bike, no shirt on at all, no hands on the bike and start imitating our dogs howling, he's still 70 or so, but that doesnt mean he can't be fit and *gasp* live a little (that seemed a little ironic to me lol),

I still watch anime occassionally, I read just about any book I get my paws on, I listen to just about any song I hear, I still watch Nickelodeon or CN occassionally too

I know people who still watch teletubbies and stuff, does it matter? really why the heck should anyone give a damn about what someone else does...
This subject in general kinda pisses me off, both ways(people who say that they are too old for blahdy blahdy blah, and people who ask aren't you too old to do blahdy blahdy blah, cuz one of them give up to fast and are incompetent, and the others are basically telling you to give up and be incompetent... I'll give up and be incompetent when I'm ready... that didn't come out right...)
