Especially in regards to Games, but also music and DVDs. Because movies and tv shows are tied into IMDB database, there is no duplicates, but amazon database is a cluster fuck so try adding wolfenstein 3D to your game list. its a nightmare! so many duplicates, so many wrong entries (one says it was released in 1969!) and none of them say its a PC Game - its either got no category or category says PC, so its sorted seperate from PC Games.

Also, many of the older games have no description from amazon, and we can't add our own, and also its annoying seeing all those wrong titles, like the gamecube game 'curious george' says in title (Comes with free movie ticket!). lol

really makes it all look tacky, and being able to clean up names and also assign them to proper categories would be ideal. Perhaps even branch off PC Games into DOS Games, PC-CD Games, and PC-DVD Games. That would really help sort out the massive amount of PC Games in the database. Maybe there should also be PC-Online Games category, as many new games don't actually come on a disc, per se (I own Half Life 2 only 'virtually').

I'm with you Prelude!
Amazon is total FUBAR when is comes to games and I'm a one for accuracy.
But I don't think having to branch off the PC games into different OS/Media type categories is that great a idea cause it would cause of work to keep in clean.

Do you think there would be any objection in merging the different editions of a game into one entry? e.g. half life 2 dvd, half life 2 cd, half life 2 special edition etc...

I have no objections, but what about game compilations? I wonder how that might work out.

They'd be connected to several games, with the games having no direct connection to each other.

I think, at least. Tom, I'm not sure what you're trying to say when you include terms like 'dvd' or 'cd', which suggests different kinds of items. But I think you just want to merge different versions, which would be thoroughly excellent.

I wouldn't mind merging stuff like Half-Life 2 DVD/CD but not special editions because most special editions add more extras that the normal editions would have and so they deserve their own entry.

Just keep in mind how many different special editions some items can have...

There'll be the simultaneously released Blue and Red editions, followed shortly by the much-anticipated Yellow edition. There'll be the Winwinwin edition, with a sticker attached for you to scratch off, then one with a special cover that has thinner margins on the top and bottom, and one with still two discs, but instead the bonus disc is called 'The Cool Kid Disc'.

Let's not mention the Ultimate, Super Duper Not-Special-But-Unique Edition...

lol @ thilian

you forget the 'game of the year' edition, which is same as all other editions, only it says 'game of the year' on the box

:)

and DVDs are annoying for those same reasons, but some collectors want to keep track of all editions.

I'd love to see just one entry for a game or dvd, and then sub-list of all editions that collectors can check off, or you can simply ignore it if you don't need to be that fussy in your collection.

and apply that same logic to also differentiate seasons of tv shows (you can check off all seasons you've seen) and so on.

duplicates really kill all these online list sites, and last.fm has a big problem with that as well. see any artist, and see the list of top tracks, and you'll see about 3 or 4 duplicates of the same track listed in the top 20.

I think the best way to fix up a database is to give the users more power to fine-tune all entries, and let the user group up all editions. I can't see a way to automate it and keep it all organized, unless you give the users lots of power to change the database. but to avoid abuse of the system, make only people with 10,000 points or more able to modify items fully.

Same goes for actors lists. this is a small community, but many great users, so I think you can trust us to tweak the actors list as best suited, rather than relying on the flaky IMDB list which sorts some films alphabetically or in order of appearance, causing some no-name extra to appear on the list, while Bruce Willis or some other big shot is not even mentioned.

I totally agree with you Prelude. Duplicates are the one thing that I'd really love to see fixed. I'd guess that it put a lot of people off using these kind of sites and if it was fixed that'd give listal the edge. I agree that allowing people to edit is the way to go. Though I'd like to see the point threshold lower - or at least have some privileges for those with less points. I've only 5670 points and have around 400 items listed - I'd like to be able to help fix up stuff.

I agree. This is the reason why I do not add my music to Listal. I hope it could be fixed soon.

DVDs and Books are the only ones not covered. That's neat, if quite a lot else.

I will be adding books/dvds soon, also the description field doesn't show up at the moment, it will be displayed in addition to the amazon description (if there is one)

Hey Prelude, how about changing all the PC games section to just PC.
Because none of the other systems have tagged on the "games" part and only "PC games" have it.

You have no idea how much I've been hanging for you to say that Tom. I think you just made my day.

Uber, for starters, the link to 'PC' is broken in Games overview page. It brings you to 'could not find item' page.

Second, it'd say 80%+ of PC games are filed under 'PC Games' platform, so it would be easier to make them all 'PC Games' them to make them all 'PC'.

Third, I'm actually thinking perhaps PC-DVD, PC-CD, and PC-DOS might be more appropriate and separate platforms, and it would help sort of tidy up our large PC Games database into 'eras' - PC-DOS being mostly the classic, then PC-CD games, and PC-DVD would be more recent releases.

But for now, I think making all items 'PC Games' would be the simplest thing to do, unless everyone wants to see PC-DOS, PC-CD and PC-DVD right away, or other suggestions. In which case, speak up. :)

Okay, PC game it will stay.

And separating into eras would be a very daunting task, and while I'm kinda against it for the sake of KISS, if anyone would want to do the research and editing, go for it.

Another request is to be able to edit who is staring in Movies and DVD's because some only have one or two or have just supporting cast and none of the main cast.

Found another area that should be editable, Track Listings in albums.
Some albums have track listings with the correct listings while other have none at all.
Any chance of being able to edit those too, Tom?

That's right. The poor souls who only recognize singles will have a chizzled time finding their albums.
