For those of you familiar w/ Fanfiction.net, I have a ?

Okay, so it's come to my attention a very stupid question:
Does the site allow you to make fan fictions based on settings and not just characters (Does it HAVE to include a canon character in it?) because I've never had that problem with other fan fiction sites that I've seen, but Idk, after checking it, I noticed that whenc reating a fan fic, you have to state what characters are in it,
BUT there is an ANY option, would that be a choice and allow for one to make the fan fic on JUST the setting... or would adding REFERENCES to the characters make it ok if it's not allowed?
And if it'snot allowed, who the hell decided a fan fic had to have canon characters in it? (I know the definition of fan fic and can prove it's doesn't)

Its just the way the sight is, I dunno. You can have a completely OC based fic with the setting, it has been done. You see that especially with the Warriors series. That setting, the one where you have to choose characters, pertains just to the anime section, if my sources are correct.
Have you tried just skipping that part of the section?

Idk, I think I'll try it, hey if they delete, I bitch to them and say they might as well change their name to 1/2fanfiction.net, cuz a fanfiction is by definition: Fan fiction (alternately referred to as fanfiction, fanfic, FF or fic) is a broadly defined term for fiction about characters or settings written ...

Fiction (short stories, novellas, novels, poetry, etc.) written by fans and based on their favorite TV series and characters.

Stories written by fans within the universe of their fandom. Also written as ff, fanfic, or fic.

Fiction written by a fan of The Outsiders (or others eg LOTR). Based around original characters and locations from the books.

I think I'd win in an argument, so I guess I'll do it
Man I need to work on that Warriors fan fic lol... I have too many ideas for that thing though lol

Dude why you wanna know about fanfic? (Genuine question)

I'm writing a few as warm ups for my larger works, they actually help in giving you time to focus on the details rather then the characters
Deleted user

Than the characters? well you have a good point.

Yeah, I've focused on making super in depth characters with odd background and all of which are capable of working as main characters(Even the incompetent ones) and yet, I've begun to realize, when taking the two main objects of writing, the CHaracters, and the rest of it, I've noticed that the rest of it is okay, but fairly lacking due to the complexity of the characters
thus, in order to work on just the rest of it, I'll do fan fics for a bit

How's about building the characters history as you go along through a series of books? E.g you find a little about them in books 1, 2, 3 and 4?

I'm gonna let you guys into a trade secret here and tell you that writing fanfiction is one of the most futile and embarrassing things you can do as a writer. It's right there at the bottom of the food chain!
It just screams "I have no original ideas!" and probably lines you up to get sued by money hungry cows like J.K Rowling anyway. Write your own stories with your own characters, that's far more rewarding.

True actually doesn't george lucas get a kick out of sueing people for fan fictioning his work?

Writing fanfiction is something I do when I'm bored, and, if you have writers block, its a good way to get your ideas flowing. There's nothing wrong with writing fanfiction; people do have original ideas, they just use characters from shows, books, ect because people always wonder "what if this had happened instead?" or "What if this was this, or he/she acted like that?"
I think the site only allows you to write a fanfic about something if they're sure the author won't sue and whatnot, but I cannot be sure. Most people put a disclaimer at the beginning of their fanfic chapters.
I do agree that writing a story with your own plot and characters is so much more rewarding, but it doesn't truly give you the right away to say that writing fanfiction is an embarrassing thing to do as a writer. Its a creative way to pass the time, and, in my case, it makes me happy when people enjoy the fanfictions I create. It makes me just that more confident that, if I publish a book, people will enjoy it.

Well what if they did this or that even if you write it differently you don't actually know how it would have gone differently unless you were the owner of it and not writing fanfic.
Deleted user

Its the imagination of the fanfiction writer that spins the 'what if' tales. Of course the fanfiction writer wouldn't know exactly...perhaps the true author wouldn't even know for sure.
A good fanfiction counts on a vivid imagination.

But each character will not play exactly in to your plans as a writer if it was done by the author.
Deleted user

I never said that they would, and I'd never expect them too. Writing, though, is about flexibility and always having a back up plan. If something doesn't fit the way it should, you could size it to the proper proportion, or you could forget about that certain idea entirely, and fall back to idea number two.

Ok atleast it's ever so slightly better than just stealing all of their work entirely.

GA, I've known that for quite a while now, but I'm not doing fan fictions where I use a pre-made character, I have a bunch of random characters I thought of when watching the series(Like, I'd be like, wouldn't it be cool it it were a wolf based character instead of a Jaguar?) and I use my original, but very basic characters, in the same areas and concepts that the person came up with,
Also, the reason why Fan fics are looked down upon now is because most of them are dumbass 13 year old girls making themselves some random girl that interferes with the story's flow and they ruin the entire thing and get the guy they want right away, no problems at all,
Again, I've found that when I make my original works, I spend all my time on the characters rather then details and settings, I need to change that, Fan Fics and describing photographs are the best way to practice that specific set of skills without getting distracted with characters

Ok that doesn't sound too bad but what Ashley's doing sounds horrible she's gonna ruin everything I like about Paolini's work she's proposing the third and final egg has already hatched and that the 5th elder already exists that's just fucking with paolini's story that he took an age to build up!!
Deleted user

Its a roleplay, not a fanfiction. I didn't make it, and I happen to adore Paolini's work. I don't expect you to understand since you can't roleplay worth crap and have no imagination. ^^
When I place OCs in my fanfics, they are never the main character. I place them in to help my stories progress.
This roleplay is a variation of Eragon, like I mentioned before. We changed the storyline so its different than the books, but with the same principles. I am going to say this for a third time since you obviously didn't get it the first time.
I, as in me, did not create, as in make, that roleplay, as in a variation of a story/movie or your very own ideas and creations.
I use a lot of vivid detail in my stories, be it fanfic or my own, about the characters and the settings. I don't find it hard to be descriptive, and I rather like it. The only thing is that I have to shorten them 'cause, if its an assignment for school, they have a limit of the number of pages you can write.
Will you quit harping on me, please? It seems like you loathe me quite a bit, but could you have the decency to keep it to yourself, Vincent?

OI cunt face I can just I don't think you should fuck around with original works you twat bag!
How's about no too you made it personal! You cunt flap!
How's about no too you made it personal! You cunt flap!

I'm descriptive, it's just, my characters are ona completely different skill leve, my description doesn't fit my characters at all, you'd think that the characters were designed by someone else, just cuz they have more twists and turns and yet somehow they come out right and straight, and they actually have good explanations to what happened to thme during life and everything, my stories don't only revolve around the future, finding out the past is just as, if not more important for my characters then what they end up doing, because without that, how can you understand the character's feelings towards things
basically my description is good, but not good enough

Well just write in past tense? That may well solve the problem.

... What are you talking about Vince o.O?
