The terms "hardcore"/"casual" gamer

Any thoughts on these terms? Do you use them or not?

Personally, am I the only one who doesn't give a crap about these terms? I just played the heck out of games if you ask me regardless of any terms.

No, you're not the only ones that hate these terms... and I don't like to use them either... but at the same time you have to admit gamers (the so-called "hardcore" ones) are really responsible for perpetrating these terms in the first place because they seemed *so threatened* by anything that is deemed "casual" since the people that made said game aren't focusing on their precious demographic. I just find it hilarious when people feel that Angry Birds is such an abomination when it's obviously not catering to them in the first place. There is room for both kinds of games.

Many gamers shoot themselves in the foot with this whole thing because while there are different types of games, splitting the fanbase into groups is really counterproductive. It sounds schmaltzy but we really shouldn't be focusing on the differences so much... but then when you go onto a site like GameFAQs and see gamers spewing crumbs at each other as they argue, er, I mean "debate" while hurling insults at one another.

Still, I guess I can stand the terms "hardcore" and "casual" compared to "AAA Gaming" which IS an abomination of a term. So basically a game with this stamp is automatically suppose to be great because they threw a ton of money at it? If that's all it took to make a great game they'd be a lot more great games out there. Personally making these AAA games is probably what is destroying the industry. Oh noes! We threw a ton of money into this game and it didn't reach Call of Duty numbers! It's a failure even though it got great reviews and people love the thing.

I also kind of hate the term "retro gamer" because I think to some people this has an unintentional negative connotation. Of course, this is from the guy who goes into GameStop and tries to talk about 21 year old GameBoy games so...

But yeah, plenty of annoying terms... seriously want to kill the person that came up with "Sony Pony." Why is that an insult? I'm sure some people like ponies....

Seriously "Sony Pony"? That is the dumbest term I ever heard in the life. I can't get past how dumb that sounds.
