I have watched this 3 times and still can't find out what really happens in the end. Who is real, who killed his wife, I am still really confused on how it ends, can anyone explain the end

It is going to take a while... Are you ready ? let's go...

Allright, what I believe (that's a personal point of view), it's that the only thing that you can be sure is that Leonard as a memory issue. That's the only thing you can be sure for 100 %, the rest is only speculation.

Few examples :

1. Was his wife killed by John G. ? Maybe, maybe not. There is a possibility that Leonard and Mr Jankis are only person and that he actually killed his wife himself and created this whole John G. story to suppress the traumatic experience of killing his wife. Pretty fucked up , isn't it ? Maybe it's completely stupid but at some point of the movie, you see Mr Jankis sitting on a chair and for a split second, you see Leonard appearing instead of him... (Check IMDB trivia)
But again, it is only a possibility...

2. How long has Leonard been sick? 3 months ? 3 years ? You never know for sure... The movie makes another interesting point that at some points Leonard may have already killed John G. and just forgot about it. But again, he may also have never killed him...

3. All the evidence that Leonard is getting are coming from people that can't be trusted at all. I mean someone gives him a car registration and he goes tatooing it on his body and for him that's the holy truth but not for me...

4. A similar point as above, during the movie, Leonard gets info basically from 2 people (Natalie and Teddy) and they are both 2 stinking liars so all the information that Leonard gets (that YOU get) is maybe 100% horseshit.

5. To make a short story, Leonard kills 2 guys in the movie but not of them had remotely anything to do with his wife but as said before maybe John G. is gone already or even didn't exist...

I could go on and on about this but my conclusion is that what's important is not if Leonard has reached his goal or not, what's important is his journey. Try to be in his shoes, every 5 minutes, he forgets what just happened, the only thing he remembers is that his wife has been killed and he has to find the murderer. It gives him a purpose. Without it, he becomes an aimless creature. So it doesn't matter if he finds John G. That's not the point. The point is this endless quest.

I think it's a fascinating movie because you never know for sure and you will never know. You can build all bunch of theories and all would be valid. Each time I see it, I see new things.

These are just random thoughts and a personal point of view.
