The Grand National

Moderator

So who took the gambit of betting on the Grand National? Has anyone noticed that the odds are getting worse by the year?

I did. I went for Iron Man, I love outside chances. Its so much more of a win IF! they win. In my company's sweepstake, I bagged two losers: Backbeat & Nadover.

I feel morally bankrupt by this but it is almost tradition to go for it every year. Note: I never bet more than £2!!!

Oh sorry. I was actually hoping only people who knew what it was and their preference to betting would reply. It is an Annual Horse Race. All I know is that its a big thing in England.

I thought it was a tennis match, and 'Iron Man' was nick of one of the Williams sisters. :)

I put a £2.50 bet each way on 'King John's Castle' and won bck £30, got some really good odds on him. I chose him because he had the most english name ha, I also put a £5.00 bet on Chelsea Harbour (named after my boys and all) but he failed miserably.

I wasnt going to comment on here today, thought people would be tired of me; but you had to mention gambling! My mum put £5 on Fundamentalitst, I think he had 100-1 odds; she was shocked when he fell.

Just when I try to get out, they pull me back in.

For the benefit of the foreign, its the biggest horse race of the year, and the the most popular /biggest horse race in the world. It is an annual event where around 40 horses (handicapped at 6years old or over) race over 4 miles and jump around 30 fences. Its also the biggest betting event of the year. Unlike a usual horse race, the each way bet usually pays out to 4th and 5th place. The top 4 this year were:

1st: Comply or Die 7-1
2nd: King Johns Castle 20-1 (although I got much better odds, 30-1 I think)
3rd: Snowy Morning 16-1
4th: Slim Pickings 10-1
5th: Bewleys Berry 12-1

In opposition to your view.

Gambling leads to 'gain of cash' thus your rich because of gambling. Addiction isn't a definite result from it. Have you been personally affected by it then?

but in the cases of the people who have gambled. There have been many people addicted to it so they lose everything...Their money...thier name and their life

I meant, someone you are close or related too. Have you got a personal vendetta against this particular vice?

I lost a penny once. I dropped it down a drain. Now i'm addicted!

I bet on Football most weekends since December. I put a £1 Accumulator on 6/7 Premier League games. All I have to do is pick the result. Who will win or if they will draw! It not only makes the games more interesting but theres the chance that I could win from £20 to £2000 or even more in some cases.

I believe I have an obsessive personality which isn't that dissimilar from addictive but I havent been roped by the gambling bug. Atm, I can take it or leave it.

If you're gonna argue your point across with the words 'some people', don't expect to get a round of applause for being a 'Moral' person.

I don't see how not being personally affected by something makes your opinion on a subject less pertinent or relevant.

True but then being vague doesn't help anyone. Addiction comes in many forms.

I get my parents to bet occasionally and yeah I usually bet on ones with random names that have no real significance

Figured I'd bet on the football instead of the National. Thinking that I'm putting my money on something I have a knowledge of rather than something I'm clueless about takes the sting away from gambling for me. Didn't pay off.

From my gambling exploits over recent months I'm £40 in the green though. Figured I'd withdraw it all today as well, going to ease off the predictions for a while.

Yuki, my old nan hated gambling, she did however bet on the Grand National; "Ah even Jaysus has a flutter on the national" she'd quip.

I wish she was alive...and actually irish.

My uncle Herbanderdrome became caught in the neon clamps of a vicious beast often referred to as GAMBLOR. Every day he would take one of my cherished items down to the pawn shop, hoik it and bet what he hoiked on anything. I remember he once bet my signed football on a 3 legged donkey, its worth outweighed even him but he lost it all on a whim and a dream. It got so bad that he started hoiking his teeth to old people, by the end he was a gummy mess and could barely speak. I bought him some false teeth for Christmas, but before he had even put them in, they were hoiked and bet on snail racing.
Eventually unky Herb got so bad he started hoiking organs, i tried to tell him to stop, i even begged, but when he lost his Liver betting on an egg and spoon race at my school sports day he didnt have long to live. Even at deaths door, being kept alive by mere machines my uncle was a betting man, he bet me his right lung that he would live 6 more days to reach the age of 46, he failed again and i keep his lung in memory that betting never prevails.
Unky Herb was given a fitting send off however, we gave him a space burial so his corpse can roam the void for eternity. I always think of him when i hear the tune of a seaside arcade machine, and it makes me tremble as i know being part of the gambling underworld will trap me in the mighty shadow of Gamblor whos clamps know no mercy...
