I was under the impression that the French word for director was "scénariste"

not, its regisseur in French. Heck, even in czech, its called 'Rezisar'.
anyways.... back to topic, not too many great Hollywood directors, I prefer the foreign ones. But if i had to give maybe 5 names, Hitchcock (or was he considered british director?), Chaplin, Kubrick, Burton, and Welles.

Thanks, Prelude76... Apart from of the ones what you named I like also Spielberg, Wachowscy, Lucas

Can't believe no one has mention the Coen brothers yet! They're probably my favorite current filmmakers. Their last couple films have only been so-so, but their catalog before that is awesome and their next project looks interesting.
I'm also a huge Terry Gilliam fan. I wish he'd make more than 1 film 5 years, though.

I love John Waters and consider John Woo a guilty pleasure... and I love horror, so I'll watch almost anything Wes Craven does.
