My suggestion:
1. Tag the year the movie/ book/ DVD/ album/ game came out by decade (1960s, 1990s, 2000s, etc). There would be less clutter, and still relatively easy to find something you were looking for... I know there are other users who do the same thing.
2. If a movie (DVD/book) is referring to a different timeframe, use a 'c' in front of it (for circa). Example: something like "The Wedding Singer" came out in 1998, but is definitely referring to the 80s. Tags for the year might be 1990s and c1980s.
