I tracked down the source, 'BH'. Tom, perhaps you could suggest alternatives to their ratings (notes in personal info perhaps) or whatever solution you think is best.

You throw a rock into a pool, there's gonna be ripples.

That's just wrong, I can't believe anyone would do something like that...

Its nice there are others here who help keep the site clean of stuff like this... :D

I can think of two possible solutions, the easiest is tag filtering, where tags only show up if they are your own, or more then one user has the same tag.

The second and more complex would be tag modding, where you can either thumbs up or thumbs down a tag. (and by default if you thumb up a tag it adds it to your list of tags for that item (if you have it in your list.) Each user can have personal threshold for when tags are visible from their view.

Either case it would reduce tag spam. (which I'm surprised we haven't seen spam url tags.)

I brought up the problem of tag pollution a couple of months ago. I wanted to add private tags to my items for better organization, but tags are global. The only response I got was a new stalker (Edit: troll is more correct, I think)--no contact from anyone who develops around here--so I continued to use the site as I saw fit.

For the record, I am not 'BH', I did not create an alternate account to make a point, and I don't know 'BH'. However, he does make it plain that you can't expect people to behave. I'm not sure what I did to deserve such devotion, but it's rather obnoxious. It doesn't seem to warrant a response, though it's kind of like that Seinfeld episode.

'BH' set up an account mirroring some of my collections. I visited the site for the first time in a while, and saw the tags he's made. Apparently, he's also entered my name as an author, actor, game, etc., and started a group in my honor as well.

So, how do you think I should respond to his friend request?

Private tags would solve my problem, but it doesn't solve the problem of people misbehaving. I think the appropriate solution is tag thresholds where tags don't appear to everyone until enough people use them. Two people is too low a threshold.

Edit:
After all this time, I now realize he is probably making fun of my abundant use of the tag 'single' that I use to indicate my DVD backup is on a single-layer disc--and of course Brokeback Mountain's existence in my collection.

I deleted all his tags, I will also see about excluding tags which have only been tagged by one person.

Tom, to clarify, do you mean to say that you will see about deleting such tags or excluding them from public view by requiring a usage threshold or some other mechanism? Please don't delete them--mine organize my collections, they do it really well, and they're the reason I value this site so much.

Excluding meaning not showing publicly them not deleting (unless they are spam). Only showing tags which are tagged by at least 2 people.
