Suggestions: Item field

Item fields are essential components to Listal's item pages. After all, which Donkey Kong would we be referring to if it weren't for the field that specifies 'Atari 2600'? I'll catalogue the suggestions in this first post, as well as who suggests them. If you like a suggestion, endorse it!

Nice thread, man. Can I give a few suggestions?

All except DVDs:

Genres - Tags are great and all, but you have to admit 'romance' isn't a very interesting tag. The twenty top tags on just about all of Listal's item types could have their need eliminated in this manner. 'romance' can say a number of things about the item. 'cauterization' gives you just a little more detail.

Content Rating - Since anything that's big and popular has the potential to be taken to court by parents with nothing better to do, we might as well get a headstart on defenses by including ratings. Plus, you can really get an idea as to the difference between games based on Marvel comics characters by one rating being 'G' and another rating being 'R'.

Music, Books, & Games:

Region - NTSC and PAL, UK Import to American EP, the cover of To Kill A Mockingbird picturing a type indigenous to New England and another picturing a new breed cropping up in Antarctica - it's maddening, I tells you! Region numbers will do a good lot of good on this end.

TV Shows:

Status - This has been mentioned before. If a show is still running, if it's over, on hiatus, was cancelled, whichever - these are all helpful to couch potatoes that take a brief moment to check their e-mail.

Once again, I really like this thread you've created. Hey, I just sent you a friend request.

Sure. Bring on more item fields. You wouldn't always have to fill in all of them, but it would be nice to have the opportunity for extra info. First off:

Movies/TV/DVDs/Books (at least these): MORE FIELDS FOR TITLES!!!

Movies: runtime (Ipanema's suggestion)
DVDs (depending on what's being planned): Country of release, subtitles, audiotracks etc.
Movies: Origin country (can have several)
(a field for language in movies is a bit tricky, considering for example the Pan-European films of the 60s/70s or Disney cartoons)

Content rating: can't see why not
Region: depends on what's being planned for merging of items, but yes
Status: varies locally

As for genres and tags, a field for genres is a good enough idea, a thriller is a thriller. BUT: the tag system is even better, more descriptive and colourful, than just Drama/Comedy. It's good to remember that right now the tags serve two purposes, to describe the item & to organise your collection. Even better would be to divide into private & public tags. This way tags like "saw in theater", "own on DVD", "read at class" would only appear on personal pages. And you could tag items that aren't even in your collection. I would use a lot more descriptive tags, but I dont want to mess up how I organise my films.

I was indeed. I only realized this when I tried to add myself as a friend and was redirected to Edit layout.

I agree that private tags would be nice for junk like that, Joona. Most of the junk lists have those tags you mention as their titles. I don't mean to suggest that tags are worthless, rather that they can be taken advantage of to a greater extent.

I vote for all four of your suggestions.

Both Music and now DVD (with the advent of Blu-ray) could do with a "media" option. DVD-A, CD, Vinyl, Mini-Disc, Cassette, Download and DVD are all relatively common for Music, while we've got DVD, Blu-ray and HD-DVD (possibly VHS too?) in the DVD section - which might want renaming?

Within music, it might be necessary to allow the user to select multiple types of media and put a number next to them - I've got releases with things like 22 CDs, 2 x CD + Vinyl, 2 CD + DVD and so on!

Music could also do with Cat# - proves a very useful way of differentiating between different releases of the same album/single.

Oh, and ability to edit tracklistings would be a "nice to have" feature.

Yes. EAN/UPC is nice, cause it comes straight from Amazon, but that's not really what the music fan uses to identify the release, but those neat cat.no's like CDFL 9004, BAFCD 040 (two CD's on my desk).

All good ideas, but again it depends on what's gonna happen when the items are merged.

Games:

How about actually DISPLAYING the platform on the item page? right now, its hidden, only accesible in list view or by going to EDIT ITEM

Also, 'Developer' & 'Publisher' is way more important that 'Manufactured by:'

I guess Manufactured could be replaced with Published, but Developer needs its own new item field, as its very VERY important, even more say than publisher.

Also Rating would be good, though it does vary between regions, and older titles had no rating. Still, good to know what's M rated and what's T rated.

Same for movie duration & theatrical release on DVDs, currently hidden in "edit item".

DVD's:
-Either allow for editing of CAST & CREW, or allow users to input the IMDB id for the film and pull the data in the same way that Movies currently does.

-Languages. For Subtitles, and Audio. I've been tagging up items with the ISO 639-3 language codes so far. Like so:
French Subtitles
Japanese audio

- Audio/Video Spec's: It would be nice to be able to see whether a particular DVD is Anamorphic/Widescreen (Letterboxed)/Fullscreen. Or if it has Dolby Digital 5.1/Dolby Digital 2.0.

Catalog # - I would like to see this for CDs & DVDs.

I'm crossing my fingers, hoping you guys have some new ideas..

Books:
Number of Pages

Movies, Music, Books, Games:
Series Name
Series Number

I'd like Series Name and Number - assuming the item's attached to a series - on Movies and Games with ordered discography for Music. Maybe even sub-series for story arcs and collective series including several authors and/or series. It'd bring a whole new level of connectivity to the place.

These suggestions receive my superdelegate endorsement.
