Suggestion for submitting images of a movie or person

gay dude 10 years, 10 months ago at Jul 29 3:49 -
I'll be elaborating on my suggestion here:
www.listal.com/suggestion/1149

Enable images to be "tagged" by the names of the people in it and the movie if applicable than tied to a single person or movie.

What I'm imagining is that a user would be able to submit an image from a "person's page" or a movie's page but the process would be similar as both would have fields for a single "movie", and an unlimited number of fields for the people the picture depicts.
At least one of the fields must be filled in as some images might not be attributed to a movie or not contain a person. A field may automatically be filled in depending on where you submit the image from.

This isn't exactly the same as tagging as this would be restricted to only movies and known people. To make things more specific, the user would have to enter the links of the listal page of the movie or person in the fields instead of simply their names. Or it could be like adding an item to a list, the database does a search on the names you entered and you select which one you are referring to in the following number of steps, depending on how much fields you entered.

The image would of course be shown in both the person/people's and movie's images page.

A possible concern is that the picture might contain a large group of people or the person listed is not focal point of the picture, perhaps far and obscured in the background.

This may be helpful in preventing duplicate images.
This may also be helpful in sorting images in a person's or movie's page. You would be able to sort by actor/actress in a movie's page, and by movie in a actor/actress's page. Another possible option is to find what movie posters contain a specific actor/actress.
Instead of deleting an image because it is in the wrong place, the image's details can be changed to make it correctly appear in the relevant pages.
Access to change these details is public to all registered users of course.

I'm wondering if my idea sucks or not or if it is my wording.

So... it's basically tagging images the way you would in Facebook?
gay dude 10 years, 10 months ago at Aug 2 2:27 -
I guess so.
www.facebook.com/help/photos/tag-photos
Similar in that the tags are actual people and that there can be multiple people tags.
Another thing to note is that an image of a movie may contain people that are not a director or actor or other positions related so the selection shouldn't be limited in that way. It could be helpful though to display actors and any production people as "tag suggestions", that could serve to save some of the user's time, a similar function of facebook's.

Just figured you can actually tag parts of an image, like a person's face or object. That is a bit more complex than my idea but could have some function here.

I like your suggestion but I would limit tagging to the movie's cast and crew, to avoid mistakes and abuse like it happens for other tags on Listal.

As already pointed out, it is open to abuse... instead of trying to limit or police it, learn from how stupid people abuse other tags and leave it as it is. Nice in theory, but stupid people inhabit this world.

...yep. If implemented, it can be abused horribly. Not as much so as the image system we have now. I didn't consider how it can be abused.

Well, it can be somewhat fixed a bit if these tags can only be inputted at image submit.

Imagine a drop down list where you can only choose names from the cast list. Or, an autocomplete input window that only allows typing in names of actors in that movie.

What if a picture's movie tag is fixed at image submit time and actor tags can be added or changed after that? That can limit the ability to abuse my concept right? For an image of a movie, it isn't too much likely for a person to get the movie wrong right?

Here is a idea that I know is pretty cruddy: [deleted suggestion about user ranks]

Perhaps a locking mechanism of a sort.

A possible good thing about my suggestion is that it may drive people to find a specific picture of a person playing their character in the movie meaning more images. I'm thinking that the more images, the better.

If the movie doesn't have a trailer like some do, images may serve to promote the movie and tell people about it instead.

I'm mostly thinking of comparing this site to imdb as I only use this site for movie listing purposes but this suggestion can be expanded to include other sort of categories like television shows, fashion shows, plays, and other such visual focused things and events.

I still want this if possible.
