Suggestion: Stats

SlackerChick 17 years, 3 months ago at Jan 15 0:27 -
One of the old list sites I frequented had stats about your collections. I had a lot of fun with them.

I was wondering if we could have something similar. Have the stats on the main list pages and have them be based off our tags. Like if you have 17 dvds tagged 'sit-com' out of the 100 in your collection then the stat might read '17% of your dvds are sit-coms'. Or 'sit-coms: 17%'.

Something like that anyway.

i like this idea, and it sounds like it should be easy to implement. maybe put it on each section's overview page, on right side, below the 'Similar users based on your ratings'?

I like this idea as well. Perhaps it would work better if the My Tags pages had a running usage and percentage count.

For example:
sitcoms (30 items, 15%) WWII (5 items, 2%)
and so on.

Love the idea... but I'd love it more if we had set names for tags because this doesn't take into account all the different terms used.

For instance, the OP used "sit-coms" but I would never tag it like that, I would write "sitcom" or just "comedy" ... There's also "romantic comedy" vs. "romcom" vs. "rom-com", etc. There are too many variations that would affect the accuracy of the stats.

Would people mind if the tags were automatically converted into standard names? e.g. person enters romcom and it appears as 'romantic comedy'

That would be the easiest way to do it

I like the idea of adding more stats like this.

I get the impression that people would mind if their tags were altered. Even if it was in good faith. Those of us who care enough about our collections to rate, tag, review, list or even simply add items to the site have put too much time and care into the process to have someone arbitrarily make decisions as to how our "personal choices" should be presented.

To be honest, with so many features, I'm surprised that we have yet to see members get into "wiki-level" disagreements over editing items.

Me too. I think items will eventually need to be lockable by moderators, with point requirements for certain features raised. We should have an easier form of requesting changes to items as well, for people noticing things they'd like fixed.
