could there be an option (like in Xing for instance) where you could make the inclusion of your profile in search engines optional?

I'm thinking of adding a privacy options on pictures and comments and about me sections which would probably address this issue, the search engine pages already set to no archive so there is no google cache.

maybe this could be extended to more privacy options in general like making profiles (or at least parts of it) private or only visible for friends.

Well the about me section and pictures, videos, comments are the only things that I can think of that would contain personal information. I dunno maybe if there is demand for this I would consider it but it makes the site coding more complicated if ratings and other things have privacy options.

I'm not sure what the problem is with that though, with the about me being made private any identifiable information would be gone

Yeah it is strange I thought post #3 was in reply to mine

To back up Bael, i too cant stand the fact all of our profiles come up when you google listal or a film you have rated. I was looking up a film and my profile came up on the second page.

Out of interest which film was it? I'm really surprised that it would come up that high in the rankings.
