Suggestion about the book section.

I know most people won't like this "suggestion" but I can't help but wish there were a section for books like there is for movies.
For example, when I watch a movie, but don't buy the dvd, all I want is to list that I've watched the movie, I don't want to have to pick one of several forms (special edition, regular, directors cut).
Likewise, when I read a book (or in my case listen to an audiobook), but don't own a copy, I want to list that I've read it and not have to pick one of MANY editions.
On the flip side, when I do buy a DVD or book, I do want to be able to say "I have the "copyright 2004" edition of..." or "I have the superbit dvd edition of..." because many times I'll own multiple editions of the same book/dvd and want to list all of them.

I agree - kind of. I don't think another section is a good idea - I think it should work by having a "super-book" (can't think of a better word) which doesn't represent any particular edition of the book. Then all the different editions of the book are subordinate objects of that book. So if you search for 1984 for example you get one book called "Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984)" - you can then click a - "list editions" link and that would display all the editions.

If you want the exact item you own, just go to the "add" link on your sidebar and add it via the ISBN number, or go to Amazon, find the exact item and add it via the ASIN.
If you've seen a movie, but don't own the DVD, then you can add the movie via the "Movie" section which contains only "watched" or "want to watch". That way you list that you've seen it, but don't own it and don't have to pick a special edition.
As for the different editions for books, it's already been discussed mutliple times to merge all the editions together and allow people to select which specific edition they have (or not). It's on Tom's long list of things to do for the site. If you just want to list that you've read it, do what most people do and just add the version that pops up with the most people who have it listed as well, or just the first one in the list.

I get annoyed by people changing the picture on the editions I've already listed, rather than finding their edition properly, or listing it themselves. And that's about the extent to which I'm bothered about the listings, I think.

I assumed the "Add" link added it to listal's database. I'll use the ISBN thingy when I get round to adding all my books - thanks for the tip Voxy!

I think having a "super book" item for all editions of a book is a great idea and didn't know that was on Tom's to do list, glad to hear it. Should have the same feature for the "Games" section of the site. Are there that many Europeans here that most members own the PAL version of any given game? Or are people just clicking "owned" on the first version that pops up?
As for why I'm not satisfied with just picking whatever pops up first, well I figure if I'm going to do it, might as well do it as perfectly as possible.
I already keep track of the movies I watch by adding them to the movies section, that was my point, I wanted to be able to do the same thing with the book section.

Looking at the membership page, where you can see a list of all the countries members come from, and sort through them, I'd say the answer to that question is overwhelmingly 'yes'. The US has the largest volume of members on its own, but the next largest membership group, the UK, almost matches it on its own (and then there appears to be a seperate one for 'Great Britain' too, *before* we even get to the mainland European countries). But I guess some people do just select the first one they see - it's obviously not as important to some people as it is to others. I see nothing really wrong with that; lisitng my stuff is all *I* want to do - making sure everyone knows I've got the edition I do is only a nice bonus.

That's actually the publisher's fault at times. Often a book's repackaged with a different cover (etc.) and republished with the same ISBN. When that happens, it's (probably) impossible to satisfy readers of both editions.
