Sug. Summary

Just thought I'd throw up a few of the suggestions going round in one big list so it is easier for Tommo and everyone to check out what we all think we need to make Listal Develop. So, in no particular order:
1: An Online Feature
Not only will this help get rid of the "Is ne1 on?" threads but it is also handy to see the busy hours of the website. I personally would lobby for it to be optional as to show but there are some people who just love to be acknowledged or spoken to when they are on!
2: Age Limit
I believe this is a pressing matter. I know Tom said that he brought/is bringing the age restriction for 13 and above but I still see a few 11 and 12 year olds about. I even see a 10 Year Old! For legallity, he should get this sorted soon and for the sake of the Naroot Problem, he should drag it up higher. I did a survey on the statistics of who contributes most and there were no members under the Age of 15 in the Top List.
Some member said it was because they haven't been on Earth for as long as the rest of us but Listal as more than Ratings to get you points! For the sake of intellectual discussion, I believe there should be a higher Age Limit for people who come on Groups.
3: Display Name Changes
I have to keep dragging this thread up from the depths of the boards because it is a very logical thing to impliment. Either you have 1/2 changes by [time limit] or the Names have to go through a screening process before they can be changed. I'm sick of seeing someone change their name because of how they are feelign at that exact moment.
4: Reviews Part 1: Length
Now Tom must know by now how much these are an annoyance. I myself must have reported a fair few for sheer shortness and irrelevance. People are getting 50 points for writing less than 10 words!!
For starters there should be Word Limit. You can't submit a review unless it reaches a certain number of characters.
Also, people are abusing the feature by Copy and Pasting reviews from other websites. This cannot go on.
5: Reviews Part 2: Tutorial
Maybe an easy way to stop people not writing anything is by giving them a little Example Field for things they could write. Tags have there 'Themes', 'Locations' and 'Genre' fields. Reviews should have some too, there is more than enough room on the page. A few things:
"Where/When did you see the film?"
"What made you want to see it?"
"What happens? A brief spoiler-free synopsis."
"Did you like/hate it?"
"Why did you like/hate it?"
"Would you recommend it?"
"Who would you recommend it too?"
Basic but a lot of the kids (I'm not singling them out, as all of the one-line reviews that I have seen are done by members aged 13-16) just don't think in as logical straight-shooter terms as elder members.
6: Reviews Part 3: Priority
At the moment, the reviews are shown in order of added. Maybe there should be a dropdown bar for people to choose how they want them ordered. I'd rather see them in Voted order so the best review/most popular goes first.
7: Moderators
Clearly we need Moderators in different timezones as Canada isn't everywhere at once.
8: Games Revisited
A few of us would like to see Games in a similar format to Movies & TV Shows with a simple Played/Want to Play. Movies/TV have DVDs as a seperate section so why can't we just have one for Games.
That way we don't have to bother with Versions and the 50,000 different cases that Amazon has in stock. I go to look for a friends rating on a game and can't see it, I recommend it and then find out that they have rated another one even though we have the same game. Please stop the confusion.
9: Search Engine
It needs to be less specific. I've tried to add so many films that are already on here because I didn't write it in exactly how it is displayed. Also a massive pain when dealing with foreign items or ones with symbols!
10: Groups
The biggest and baddest of Listal Problems. There are various members who contribute to this which I won't go into. But the following statements will be my opinion on the section.
-Delete Random Chat until we get rid of the people who abuse it or spam in it.
-Ban RP until it can be maintained and there are actually creative people wanting to do it.
-Make Users earn at least 1000 Points before they can enter the Groups. That way making an Alternate Account becomes a chore. Plus I'd rather talk to people who contribute than those who wanna baddle!
-Mods Only Section so they can discuss Maintaining/Salvaging the Groups Section.

I agree with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.
I don't agree with some of your points on 10. I think we still need Random Chat, we don't need to ban RP, and I don't agree with the 1000 points rule. I do agree with the mods only section.

I meant delete/ban RC & RP temporarily so that it isn't as convenient to use. We play the waiting game, becoz if some of the other rules are put into action we won't have as many of the problem children. Once they are gone, we can place them back.
Why don't you agree with the 1000 Rule? It will stop somebody logging in as their 10 other accounts and posting porn or flaming other users. Since Tom hasn't slapped out a few IP bans, this is just a failsafe to stop in his absence since only he can atm.
When people join up to the site, they should read what its about and not start threads like "What is Listal?" and "What am I meant to do here?". Otherwise we are letting those people in who thinks this is a MySpace alternative.
So if thats the case, the only problem will be someone signing up with another account just to abuse the site.
Which brings me on to another point. You can get infinite votes by having as many accounts as you want. This makes voting a redundant feature then!

I agree with every one of those, I think it would add to the contribution level of this place as well as get rid of the majority of people who don't want to contribute.
As well as make RPing(Eventually) A fun, enjoyable and ORGANIZED thing(I suck at organization, but RPing is one of the few things that I like when it is organized)
Getting rid of RC for a while would make people contribute more to the other threads,
Mods only section would make it so much easier for the Mods to be able to discuss without other people butting in

and a good review(As in it was great to them, this would range anywhere between 6 and 10)
NOTE: They would be in a two column view, Good COlumns on the left, bad on the right... or something like that ^^
I want to reinforce Prelude's 'Creative Corner' group idea, unpublished books, drawings, poetry, that kind of stuff, would be put in there, (I mean stuff made by THEM, not other people)

I would like to say that for movie reviews it's often pointless to add a plot synopsis, since that's what item description is for. Definitely we don't need plot synopsis in every review. Of course it's a neat way to make a review look longer.

Anyone who participated in the recent public accusation of VV is not community mod material in my opinion.

The mods seem to have a plan to handle this, so let's give them some room to work and see how it goes. I don't think we should make too much noise about this on the forums right now. A little patience.

The whole Ratings Part of the review is enough of a hint how much that person likes/hates it.
If there are going to be Review Categories, the reviews should be sorted into different reading types:
1. For people who have seen the movie, so the reading has spoilers but no one should care. Plus, maybe a discussion can follow in comments.
2. For people who want to see the movie, so the reader can get a glimpse of the film without losing any of the experience. Spoiler-Free etc.
In this case, people may write two reviews but its a start because I don't read reviews for a film I haven't seen in fear of losing out on some of the experience of watching it.

If this is so bog standard, then why do people write one line reviews? Because not everyone is creative with putting their thoughts into words. If they had an array of hints, maybe we could see them write something different.
Maybe instead of a list, there is a hint button. You press it and then one of the ways to make writing a review easier will pop up. I don't see it curing itself overnight.

Creative Corner - For your own stories, poems, fanfics, art and drawings.
Sports - Sports are in TV Programmes and Films but they also have their own medium, so it could be beneficial to add another angle on the dicussion front.
Serious Discussion - For current/world events or contraversial topics, obviously for seasoned and informed people.
Sub Groups - It may end up making some threads redundant but we could throw in Sub Groups to every group. So for example, games could be split into Consoles or Game Genre.

There's just a tendency at Listal development for same people to repeat the same arguments over several threads, rather than continuing the discussion where it left off. Which might get somewhere. Irks me a little. Hmm, it's like I've said this already...

Just report them and leave it to the mods'/admin's discression. End of story. It should be remembered that it was pretty much "anything goes" until recently, and we've only just got moderation in Groups section. Eventually we should get visible rules/guidelines and it will be made clear what happens if you break them.

Fighting in LD isn't the way but thats where these problems arise. It is where the crucial points are brought forward so I'm not going to start a new thread just to get my point across when all the material is in one thread already.
I have reported it/him. Tom never gives me any feedback except for when the incident occurred and I assume Prelude is away because he hasn't replied to anything or my messages recently.
Pornographic and Obscene Images are banned on all non-deviant websites so for me that is too far when someone does, even if there are not any rules in place.

True but i'm looking to the future in that instant. There are short term solutions and there are long term solutions.

Can we not clutter this thread with dicussion/accustations RE Vincent as well? It was rather dull and cyclical last night, it's getting even more so now. As you say, you've reported it, therefore your part is done. It's up to Tom & the mods to sort out as they wish.
Re: point 8 - if you're arguing for splitting actual items from titles within games, then you might as well argue for the same within books and music as well. As has been pointed out before, linking items will solve the problems you've listen when that's available anyway.

Mate, ripping into VV was last nights fiesta. We got a whole other ball game to play today.

The search engine specificity is my biggest issue with listal, it's extremely frustrating and goes, as you say, towards the emergence of multiple clones of the same item being added to the database. Simple things like recognising that '&' and 'and' are the same thing is something the search must be able to do.
Otherwise, I'm pretty much in agreement with all of those suggestions. Just by joining listal you receive a lot of points for filling out profile information and inviting friends. I don't think a points ban on the groups section is a bad idea at all. The PM ability will still work for any technical questions and the like.

Actually, I'm dead against it personally. DVDs vs TV/Movies are a different issue to Games, Music and Books.
The argument reason for separation in the former case is quite simple - many releases on DVD are never shown on TV, nor are they movies. For example, Sports/Motoring/Music releases. With Books/Games and Music it's simply not the case, and that's where linking items as being the same title (yet with different info) in whatever form Tom does it allows for what you want - all reviews/ratings being listed and just say I've played/listened to/read it, while those of us who own a specific version can quite easily mark that fact and catalogue our libraries.

My opinion of the suggestions will thus be represented in the order I present them, the first holding the biggest priority in my mind while the last few don't hold as big as a priority in my mind:

And while I'm at it I think the Anime section ought to be renamed as the Animation/Comics section to allow for a more diversity of topics discussed.

I will adding many of these features but I'm locking this thread because discussion about many different issues in one thread gets confusing.
