Stop spam, use Captcha

Listal is plagued with spam. Anti-spam verification tecniques like CAPTCHA forms might help stop at least part of it. Captcha forms can tell real users from spamming bots which post multiple spam messages. What do you think?

Captcha simply annoys users by asking them to input absolute claptrap. There are alternative systems available, not that I am knowledgeable enough to be able to tell you what they are. It's a no from me, but I would welcome a more user-friendly alternative.

@OnionJack I am no expert either but I guess there are ways to use captchas in a non-annoying manner. Let's it's only asked after someone adds many comments in a row, many "suggestions" in a row, and things like that.. So it would not affect most users or only once in a while.
Also, it could be limited to new members.
However, I think "something" should be done to stop spam as that's annoying too! ;)

I think it would help if we had a better system for reporting spam profiles and if they were dealt with in a timely manner. Or if mods could delete them without admin approval. If they are reported than the mods can at least ban them from the areas they are spamming.

Mods should be able to suspend accounts for a few days, pending admin investigation. Just a thought.

The suggestions area is over run by spam currently. Sorry about that...
I site banned most of those accounts and will contact Tom about ether perminatly banning those accounts or doing a full ban of whatever email serverice those spam accounts are ridding in on.
In other news... ya... I sort of think at least one Captcha feature when a person creates an account would be useful. Also, making it mandatory to fill out more profile information.

Update - Tom set it so that you actually need points to post suggestions. Hopefully that will cut down on 'suggestions spam'. He also went through and deleted the spam posts. Yay! :)
