So who thinks that Johnny Depp is overrated?

Moderator

This is bound to provoke contraversy. Anyone got a view?

Alright you wankers. After reading reviews on films that he stars in, its arse-licking central. I just think he has gone beyond his status as a great indie star and he'll soon be run of the mill actor like DiCaprio.

Does this mean that every film he stars in from now on he'll get praise regardless?

how about - being a good threadstarter - giving us your view first (isn't there even a post about such a rule by our one and only Prelude?)? i for one think he is certainly no new Marlon Brando or James Stewart, but he is in my opinion one of the best Hollywood has to offer right now. he's versatile, he has the looks and charisma and normally he chooses his (mostly interesting) roles and movies carefully.

So what - girls like the man! And who's to quibble? He's very attractive (coming from a straight male).

Arse-licking central? Look, I don't want to get into an argument but if he stars in a film and is good then people are going to mention his great acting skills. By your logic it seems if there's a good actor around, then any reviews that mention a good performance they've delivered then it's arse-licking central. In some of my reviews I've mentioned my interest in it being sparked by Depp - fair enough. I like his acting, I want to explore his movies. Same goes for my friend Claudia who also likes Johnny and also is a member of the site.

And by the way, Johnny's performance in Nightmare on Elm Street wasn't very good. I won't praise him for that. Acting debut, after all. His acting skills have developed with time. I don't love all of his movies - in fact I hated Pirates 3 and a few others - but I'm still fond of his talent. Some of his latest movies have been lacklustre I grant some people that. That doesn't meant the man has lost his talent! He is a determined performer who does everything he can with a script. Watch a film with Channing Tatum or Hayden Christensen. You might realise Johnny's talent after watching those two young people spit out some appalling acting!

-LOL- Chibi....

So what - girls like the man!

Dirty, dirty blanket statement.

Personally, I think he's great for playing oddball roles... but that's mostly because I think that's close to what he is in reality; very much eccentric and outside the box.

I just don't think he's uber-attractive (though the right photographs can occasionally depict him as such), nor do I make a big fuss about his movies. He just, generally, isn't my type.

Why is how 'fit' he is keep coming up whenever JD is mentioned. Why is that even an issue? I am more focused on his stardom and talent in terms of this thread.

I find JD very entertaining hence my rating but you read people writing overboard saying he is the new talent of this century despite being around for much longer.
Vix 16 years, 11 months ago at Jun 14 1:20 -
This is a guy who turn his back on Teen Beat "stardom" for quirky roles that actually allowed him to have a longer shelf life than you would have expected.

I wouldn't consider him the "new talent of this century" but he's a compelling actor.

I don't think he's amazingly good, no. But, on the other hand, he ain't half bad, either. As others have mentioned, he picks his parts well, and (generally) plays them well, too. I wouldn't say he's one of the very best, but he's only one or two rungs down.

Heh, bit off-topic but I just noticed this.
This is bound to provoke contraversy.

Sure he's aight but he wasn't that good that I'd watch any of the PotC sequels any time soon (again).

So what - girls like the man!
I'm sure some guys dig him too.

I like Johnny Depp, I think he'd a fantastic actor. He has been guilty of starring in films that under-represent his acting skills, such as Secret Window, which wasn't only an average film, but also portrayed him as a fairly dull and lifeless character.

When he gets it right though, I think there are few men who are better actors. Think of the vitality and raw comedy he bought to the Pirates movies. He's surrounded by detestable actors in Orlando and Keira Skeletor Knightly, but everyone still loves that film...and it's because of him! Capable of the extraordinary, that's why I respect him.

Then again I think Leonardo DiCaprio is pretty solid too!

When people speak of his beauty I think that a large proportion of that attraction his the emotion he can convey with his eyes.
This in turn adds to his acting capabilities.

His eyes can portray such a massive array of emotions. Evoking empathy, humour, seduction and spine tingling creepiness.

The fact that he is blessed with such a smoking hot visage just means people are drawn to watching him when he is on screen and are able to empathise with what he is portraying on another level than just his voice or body language because of it.

I think Jim Carrey and others have the same gift to boast.

On Grand's point about people loving Pirates just because of him - it's not just because of Johnny! It's an exciting, fun and original film. By no means perfect, but loads of fun.

And casting does mean everything. Johnny's charisma brought Jack Sparrow to life. What if someone like Robert De Niro or George Clooney played the part? They'd be boring and monotonous.

Like Dionysian Child stated, he's fantastic at portraying emotions and hence easy to get into his character. If a lead actor can't act and is terribly wooden it drags down the film value. With a good lead actor, suddenly things become interesting.

To each his own, though.

It is because of Johnny, if someone else had played Cpt Jack, it would have fell on its arse. I also like Leo, GA.

Why do the kids think because they got a decent mark in Math or Lextiles?? that they are significant? It was probablt the remedial paper. Am I Right Fellas?? HHAAHHAA!!

All these kids are going to pipe up with the same JD Rocks the shit because of Pirates. I don't hate him, I just hate people jumping on the bandwagon that he is the epitome of talent.

Is he a fad?

man dem maderators have been messing up the threads yo. this is crazy, absolute madness

I'm pretty sure his current popularity at the moment is a fad but I think he's an already well-established actor to continue on strong even after all the new fans move on to other things. I must admit, all this Sweeney Todd and Captain Jack merchandise is getting out of hand but I shouldn't talk since I have a HSM shrine in my room. There seems to be alot of crossover with Tim Burton fans and Johnny Depp... hmm... I think I'm onto something here!
