So the Xbox One

LordDarkrai 10 years, 11 months ago at May 22 22:35 -
So thoughts on it. Are you going to get it, not, or indifferent overall?

Not sure at the moment on getting one while I question their ideas of paying a fee for used games, and the "always online" thing.

There's no backwards comparability in all this generation's main home consoles; the new Xbox isn't compatible with Xbox arcade games either. I'll probably stick to PC gaming.

Nintendo will have better console exclusives (Zelda, Pikmin, Mario, Smash Brothers, et cetera) worth buying the console for and the DRM isn't terrible. Sony has a few exclusive IPs, like Little Big Planet, Quantic Dream's games (Heavy Rain), and Team ICO's games. Microsoft has no exclusive IPs that interest me.

Nintendo's a step behind the Xbox One and PS4 so I'm unsure if major companies will have great PS4/XBOX exclusives that are almost worth getting the console for, like Red Dead Redemption for the last gen, but I would wait for that to happen and not got a Xbox One now.

The paying for used games has immediately made my decision to not buy an Xbox One. The only thing that could possibly sway me towards Microsoft is these 15 exclusives they're talking about within the first year. If they turn out to be good I might buy one down the line, but I'd probably never play the damn thing because who wants to pay however much they're going to rip us off with for used games?

I'm sticking with Wii U and I might get a PS4 in a few years.

Always online thing has always bothered me, and I hate the idea for used game fees (they don't call them M$ for nothing).

I just read that they probably won't be letting indie developers self-publish since the XBLIG thing is apparently stagnating (article here). That's a strike against it, but the PC has always been a better place for indie games.

I agree with Mr. Saturn, no interest in their few exclusives.

Nothing else in their reveal interested me. It's cool that you can use voice controls to switch to TV, but I'd rather my TV learned to do that. :P The constant need for a Kinect connection is really weird too.

Not like I was ever planning on getting an Xbox, there's just so many reasons not to.

I'll be getting one eventually, because that's what I do as a collector...But I'm not likely getting one at launch.

Unless Sony announces similar things about the PS4, like 'always online' (or once online every 24 hours or whatever it is) or fees for used games, I think Microsoft might be digging themselves a grave.

I do think it's a big mistake to focus on the Xbox One being an all-in-one entertainment device...Xbox is known as a video game console. People not into video games aren't very likely to even consider buying an Xbox One for streaming their movies, controlling their televisions, making a sandwich, or whatever other fantastic things it can do. Folks into video games will be...If the focus is on the games rather than all the other things it can do. It's fine being an all-in-one device, so long as Microsoft remembers that it's still a game console, and market it to people who play games, rather than ignore their current fan base in attempt to lure in the casual audience.

I hope it does well, and I hope everything is better than it sounds...But it really isn't looking too good for the ol' Xbox One right now.

I've never been a fan of Xbox, having always gravitated to Nintendo and PS. With the need to pay used game fees and the always online bit, I'm not likely to buy one any time soon. I had been contemplating an Xbox 360, even though I've mostly been a PS2/PS3 person lately. And I agree with Ape. Unless you're into video games, there's no really much incentive to buy one for streaming movies and whatever else it can do. I like the voice control of the tv, but I could see tv and satellite execs working on that feature in the future. No real need for me to buy this thing. To me it's between the Wii U and PS4, though I might opt for PS4 in a few years, rather than immediately.

Whatever happens I hope the used game fee doesn't do well, because if it makes them a ton of money Sony will probably jump on that bandwagon as well.

The Xbox One is like an arcade machine you buy and have in your own home but still have to put quarters in to play. What the fuck is all I have to say to that. But it'll probably sell great since for every five people who make a rational decision not to buy one, there will be one imbecile fanboy who will buy five consoles, one after another, as each one breaks, canceling out me, you, and anyone with even half a brain cell.

I have been gaming since 1987, since I was three years old. But I seriously think my gaming days are coming to an end. I grew up on Alex the Kidd and Zelda, back when games used to be fun and simple and not $60 a pop. Did you know there was a time when not every game had a gun in it? Did you know there was a time when consoles used to focus on actual video games and not a bunch of other gimmicky side-shit? I know we're all passionate about gaming, but I sorta feel like I've finally outgrown games. Not because I've moved on, but because gaming has moved backwards.

I'm probably the wrong person to be answering this question. Despite the size of my collection I don't own anything Xbox (the exclusives aren't my thing and all the games I would want are multiplats). I'm probably more interested in the original Xbox than the 360 and Xbox One. Additionally, the further we get in console generations the less and less games I'm buying anyways. I kind of hate the term retro gamer but I guess I kind of am one. There's plenty of games to be discovered on obsolete systems to keep me happy. I mean out of all the damn Zelda games I only played A Link to the Past... so, you can stone me if you want.

Anyway, despite not being interested the used game fee has me up in arms. This might make me seem like a dick but I don't care if GameStop loses out on this, I care about independent game stores like the one in the neighboring town. I'm really good friends with the owner and I'd hate to see them negatively impacted because of this. I don't want to go off on a tangent but that store is awesome and it's very nice to have a business that caters to gamers fond of generations beyond the current. There are several games I never would have given a chance if I had to go online to purchase them. I'm sure everyone will probably agree that it's easier to but down money on something that's right in front of you... for better or worse.

But as far as the whole conference/event goes I feel it was an embarrassment. I was pretty stunned that they pretty much missed the point and what everyone was expecting. However, I know Sony said the PS4 "would play used games" but that is a very vague sentence. Like others I'm very hesitant of what that really means. However, I strongly dislike how companies feel content in giving the customer less leeway with the things they purchase. Yeah, yeah... I know we don't own it as far as "intellectual property" but I want some stake in the things I own.

Cripes, I could go on and on about this. I find it hard to feel for game developer's situations when the internet has given them a platform to say dumb things that should stay in the development room. Personally, I feel the technology and it's cost has evolved too quickly when you have to sell 15 million copies of a game for it to be "successful." It's simply ridiculous and I also want to shoot the person that came up with the term triple A gaming. What moronic terminology.

I have been a gamer (and collector) for a long time. Like everyone else, I think the used game fee and "always online" feature are both terrible ideas. Personally, we should be able to play games (new or used) whenever and wherever we want. If we want to rent a game to check it out before we spend our money on buying our own copy, we should be allowed to do so. The same thing goes with borrowing a game from a friend.

As far as the "always online" feature is concerned, I find it disturbing to say the least. The same holds true to always having the Kinect on. It seems creepy to me.

I am planning on buying a 360, so I doubt that I will buy the new console anytime soon.
