Sequels That Should Never Be Made.

Deleted user
Deleted 17 years, 12 months ago at May 16 15:25 -
Are there any franchises, or amazing movies that you believe should never have sequels? That maybe the original movie should be above being tainted by further works?

I'm asking because of the recent article on Variety that mentions there will eventually be a "sequel" to Point Break. I couldn't help but shudder when I read that. I abhor the attempt at making money by reviving an old movie that launched the career of its actors, or that have become cult favorites. I feel as if it's really just a form of leaching off someone else's success.

Did you know that there had been plans to make Mrs. Doubtfire 2? Thankfully that whole idea has been scrapped now. (Though it is still on the database here...)

I'm not big on all the Disney sequels. Every time I think, "Let's hope they never make a sequel to..." I always have to think about it and realise that they already did... Well... At least I can safely hope they don't make a sequel to Anastasia! That would just ruin it for me!

Can't think of many others right now...

Woah, Mrs. Doubtfire 2?! ... that's jsut crazy. the first movie was cute and clever, but I'm not sure a second one would have been needed.

It's kind of like teaching your kid to flip the bird; it's cute and adorable... but when your kids starts teaching it to other kids in the playground, or flipping off your boss or a cop... it's just not funny anymore :P

Ha.. I've never even seen the first one.....
DefenderOfKnowledge 17 years, 12 months ago at May 16 19:32 -
It was good. But there's no reason for a second one...

I agree with that ForgivenForSure. Sometimes I don't see the point of sequels and I'd be horrified if they actually did one to Point Break. Just horrified. Serioulsy, how could they?! If they did I'd boycott it anyway (has anyone figured out I'm addicted to boycotting yet? :P) but the fact of the matter is even if I don't watch I'll know it exists and it'll be very upsetting.

I can't think of any really except sometimes I wonder about the whole Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Sometimes I'm pro and sometimes I'm anti. Oh I just thought of the Scary Movie franchise (first one was funny but after that it was just stupid), Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. They should have just left it at one.
DefenderOfKnowledge 17 years, 12 months ago at May 17 4:29 -
Pirates is ai'ight. It's when they don't even leave a chance for a sequel is when it sucks.

Raven 17 years, 12 months ago at May 17 6:20 -
Oh don't get me wrong. I like Pirates it's just I have moments when I think they should have left it at just one. Other times I worry that they'll go beyond 3 and then I'll get pissed off because that's just being stupid!
KingFahtah 17 years, 12 months ago at May 17 7:59 -
Snakes on a Plane 2? :(

When is Titanic Again coming out?
Sarosh© 17 years, 12 months ago at May 17 8:48 -
Godzilla Part 2..!! (cannont be made) :P

I think they should make Braveheart part 2.. i loved that movie..and is one of my favourites :)
KingFahtah 17 years, 12 months ago at May 17 9:00 -
If you mean the Godzilla blockbuster from the late 90s yeah, I think it's not gonna happen
Mind you the original Godzilla had so many spin off it's not funny. Godzilla vs King Kong must be seen to be believed!
Sarosh© 17 years, 12 months ago at May 17 9:04 -
haha..godzilla vs King Kong..and refree could be either one
1) Batman
2) Superman
3) Spiderman...
Just to make the movie a bit more interesting and yes...not at all 'Funny' LOL
KingFahtah 17 years, 12 months ago at May 17 9:08 -
Well yes if you want a rematch. But I'm serious, Japanese film makers milked that poor old lizard dry. He battled everything that moved.

Sarosh, I don't think it would be possible for there to be a Braveheart 2 because it was actually based on someone. What could the sequel possibly be about?
KingFahtah 17 years, 12 months ago at May 17 10:00 -
It could be about Celtic beating Chelsea in the champions league...eh

How about Police Academy 8. The G8 summit
Sarosh© 17 years, 12 months ago at May 17 10:13 -
lol..i know there can't be a sequel, i so much love that movie, that i want a sequel to be made, let it be vs Chelsea, never mind :) but, something or anything should be made.. LOL

No no... you guys are taking the easy way out and mentioning crappy movies! ... I'm talking about good movies, movies that you actually like or that have become classics.

Like.... Gone With the Wind... God forbid there should ever be a sequel to that, or a remake for that matter. That would be so insulting.... or Spaceballs 2!

Or take a movie you really loved as a kid, and if they decided to remake it with today's advanced technology, it would ruin the memory for you... like The NeverEnding Story
KingFahtah 17 years, 12 months ago at May 17 12:35 -
Never Ending Story has sequels. It is never ending after all.

If you read that paragraph again, I stated movies that you wouldn't want to see remade.

Ah now I see Voxy. When I reread what you first posted I start to wonder what I was thinking... lol

I think I'd cry if they redid the sequels for Never Ending Story. I watch the sequels now and I laugh so hard. It wouldn't be as funny if they changed it.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
To Kill A Mockingbird
Donnie Darko

Sequels to those would've just been cruel and unusual punishment I reckon
KingFahtah 17 years, 12 months ago at May 17 12:44 -
There's a few movies like that where they took the original and messed with it, changing the look or context. they f***ed up ET like that. Or even dare I say the original Star Wars trilogy. They made an episode of South Park to show how evil this is..
Phil 17 years, 12 months ago at May 17 12:44 -
Might take a look now it's out, but 28 Days Later didn't need a sequel and The Matrix should have had far better sequels than the dross served up.

Also, slightly less obvious, but Donnie Darko's another one that could end up in danger of the never ending march of sequels and would potentially be ruined by it.

As for the Pirates thing - no problem with it having sequels, but not in the way that they've been written. Would have worked far better as three self contained stories (like the first) with some common threads rather than the second film being thin on plot and just clearly being a way to get to round to this month's instalment.
KingFahtah 17 years, 12 months ago at May 17 12:46 -
I didn't mind the Johnny Depp version of The Chocolate Factory. Not a patch on Gene Wilder though.:(
KingFahtah 17 years, 12 months ago at May 17 12:51 -
How about making a new version of Hard Day's Night with Artic Monkeys, Scissor Sisters, Maroon 7 or somebody. That would quite suck.

Oh yes I think "Carry on London" will/should most likely not happen. Shane Ritchie is not funny, neither is Vinnie Jones :(

I saw 'Charlie' version first and then the classic 'Willy Wonka' version, and I'll go on record that the new one not only had its very unique style, i also found it much better and the ending a lot more effective and enjoyable. Burton did such a fine job on that remake and has set the bar how other 'classic' film remakes should be handled.

As for sequels to great films, any film that ends in a twist or with a shocking ending should NEVER be allowed to have a sequel.

Oh, and the Indiana Jones 4 movie. I'm so torn on that one. I felt part 3 ended the trilogy perfectly, but I also know Indy has a TON of books based on him, similar to James Bond. I almost wish they'd find a suitable replacement for Indy, use part 4 to 'introduce' him, and then hope he has enough strengths to turn it into a franchise series of movies, similar to James Bond. But I have a bad feeling it will disappoint, embarrass an aging Harrison Ford, and leave a bad mark on the previous Indy flicks. I mean, 'Shia LaBeouf' is going to be in it? if they try to make HIM the new Indiana Jones, I'll shoot myself and go hang out with the one that should've been the true replacement; River Phoenix, R.I.P.

I say we nominate 'Daniel Craig' to be the next Indiana Jones. He kicked a good boot up all his critics' arses when he nailed the James Bond role, I'm sure he would make an awesome Indiana Jones as well. LOL
KingFahtah 17 years, 12 months ago at May 17 13:11 -
Eh...having previously mentioned Vinnie Jones, I'd like to see him go for Bond. Like a tough guy Connery sort of style, if he can learn to be a bit more sophisticated. Yes that Indie thing should never have seen the light of day. Harrison is now old enough to play Connery's role as his dad.
tartan_skirt 17 years, 12 months ago at May 17 13:17 -
I'm just waiting for the day when they make a film titled something similar to The End of Everything and then them releasing a sequel. :P

Ooo! I know one! Who Framed Roger Rabbit should *never* have a sequel! I might flip out...

Sean Connery is in it too, as well as the aged 'Karen Allen from Raiders of Lost Ark. It will feel like 'Grumpy Old Men' sequel, won't it?
KingFahtah 17 years, 12 months ago at May 17 13:22 -
No. As great as that was, poor Bob Hoskins should not be put through that again.

Ha yes Grumpy old men sounds just right!

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory ... didn't that actual get a sequel? Something about a glass elevator, or was that just a book?

And there totally was a sequel to Grumpy Old Men.. Grumpier Old Men... Seriously! -LOL-

But too true on the Indiana Jones... that one's got me gnashing my teeth!

It was the book Voxy. Phew I say to that because I couldn't handle a sequel. It'd be a torment to me because that is my most favourite film of all time.

I'd flip out too, Tartan Skirt, if they did a sequel to Roger Rabbit.

"Who framed Roger Rabbit" is one of the worst movies of all time.

Prelude 17 years, 12 months ago at May 18 1:40 -
You may feel its overrated, or not your thing, or you maybe got bored and turned it off, but be careful making a claim such as 'worst movie of all time'. Trust me, once you've seen enough movies, you'll realize you can't throw such a harsh claim to just any movie you disliked.

I personally am indifferent to 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit'. I don't have any strong feelings towards it, either as a love or hate feeling. But one thing it certainly isn't is 'worst movie of all time'. The direction was superb, the plot was great with its 'film-noir' style, the animation mixed with live action was a nice achievement at the time, and even had quite a few funny moments.

Look up IMDb's Bottom 100 list for what truly deserves to be ridiculed.

It must be a bad sign when I look at those movie titles and go... "Hey, that wasn't that bad." ... Except maybe BloodRayne :P

Awww I actually liked WFRR. :P It was just the first film I thought of...

Terminator 4. Enough said.

I was vehemently against Terminator 3 too, and that turned out to be an average film. Just because Terminator 2 was one of the rare occassions when the sequal was utterly amazing, they think it gives them the freedom to go and do whatever they want after it. I heard T4 wasn't even going to feature Arnie! GTF OUDDAHERE!
DefenderOfKnowledge 17 years, 11 months ago at May 20 1:45 -
"Who framed Roger Rabbit" is terrible. It's a kids movie, and has references to sex, and alchohol and such. They showed it on freakin Disney.
tartan_skirt 17 years, 11 months ago at May 20 14:10 -
Exactly! Plenty of kids shows have hidden references, and plenty more do it by accident. And to be fair, it is a PG so if parents are worried about that kind of thign then that suggests there is something there.

Never heard of Roger the Cabin Boy and Seaman Staines I presume? :P (British urban legend about a cartoon called Pugwash.) Just look at The Magic Roundabout!

Anyway, it's just one of my childhood favourites and I wouldn't like a sequel.
